Default what kind of fiberglass to use

I'm about to build my first board and I can't figure out what kind of fiberglass is best. I weigh about 120lb and I want my board to have some flex. I'm going to make a twintail out of 1/4" BB using a vacuum press. I'm so super confused about what kind and how much fiberglass to use.

If you use 2 pieces of 1/4" you'll have more than enough flex. I'm 150 lbs and my 40" is soooo bouncy.

You can give it even more flex by adding some camber. Honestly, you dont need fiber. Its some expensive ####.

that doesnt really answer his question but this does:

if you want to add strength and rigidity use this type of fiberglass; Fiberglass Cloth - 4 Ounce
put it on 2 layers at a time (top or bottom) until you have reached the desired amout of flex. if you are unfamiliar with epoxy and hardener i recomened this epoxy: MAS Low Viscosity Epoxy Resin
    and this hardener
    MAS Slow Epoxy Hardener
if you want to add some style to your board you can use a combo of fiber glass and this red polyester cloth it looks AMAZING on the bottom of decks:
    Fiberglass Cloth&categoryId=520&refine=1&page=GRID

good luck on the deck mate!!!

thanks for the links! i think i'll use the fiberglass for the strength but I might not want to camber it. I'm not sure about the flex and I don't want it hit the ground.

it all depends on the type of fiber glass you use. as you can see in the links provided fiber glass comes in many weights (usually ounces) the heavier fabric you use the less layers it will take to make the board stiff. it also depends on the length of the board. If you want to make your board stiff with minimal layers go for a heavy weight fiber glass. If you want to make your board stiff with minimal layers and you want some style as well go for a heavy weight carbon fiber. again it all depends on the circumstances thats why i say put a layer on one at a time (top and bottom) then let your board dry and place on some 4x4 blocks of wood were the trucks would be to test the flex. this process may be timke consuming but this way you get your board just right.

    Good luck

4 ounce fiber glass is very easy to wotk with IMO i prefer to use Fiberglass Cloth - 10 Ounce beacuse i know how much i need to make my decks the exactly the amount of flex i want 10 ounce is much stronger but it is more expensive the reason i recomended the 4 ounce was because the original poster of this thread said he still wanted a little bit of flex

Anyways after i put layers of fiberglass on my boards i will put 1 or 2 layers of
Polyester Cloth 4.0 Ounce - Red Pigment or Carbon Fiber Twill Weave Cloth or Carbon Fiber Cloth Fabric Blue Texalium 31.5" 3k 8oz - eBay (item 120529354699 end time Feb-17-10 10:00:40 PST)

    just for looks

do you put the carbon fiber cloth on the same way you apply the fiber glass?

you say to use the 4 oz. cloth, but the 10 oz provides more rigidity. Is 10 oz. fiberglass cloth less transparent? I am making my own longboard and I painted a design on the deck before the fiberglass so I want a cloth that provides some strength (with a bit of flex still) and transparency when dried so i can still see my design. Thanks man!

I prefer the lighter grade cloths as well. I think its a bit easier to work with, generally speaking. Also, I like the UV activated resins—no need for a hardener mix.

And just keep in mind if you buy surf resins that there's Laminating Resins and Gloss Resins. Different stuff for different purposes.

Good luck with it and use plenty of ventilation!

    That's some mighty expensive 4-oz cloth. E or S?

    Here are some more suppliers:

Fiberglass Supply - Reinforcements, Fabrics, Cloth, & Knits

    Fiberglass Cloth
