Graphics Contest 2010 Entry Thread - PRO

This is the entry thread for the PRO's. You professional type artists post your entries right up here. You know who you are.

You have until Sunday the 7th of March to get your entries in.
Only one entry per person.
All entries must have been created during the month of Feb, 2010.
All entries must be on a skateboard of some sort. Permanently affixed to that board. Longboards are skateboards before anyone asks.

You PRO's get to judge yourselves. For those not familiar with how this works I'll tell you.
After the entry period has passed you will receive a PM from me. I will give you the voting instructions again. You just have to respond back to me on that PM with your scorings.

Here is how the scoring work. You vote on all the entries EXCEPT your own. No voting for yourself. Pick your top three and rate them on a scale of 1-10. 10 being the highest/best score. I add all the scores together. The artist with the highest combined score wins.

Just like the AM's, all you win for your efforts is bragging rights. Bragging rights for a whole year. Winner of the official annual graphics contest.

So lets see those entries.

Let me take you guys through the process of how i did the board:



This is the board i use for land paddling, and i also use it as a buttboard ( but since i dont buttboard all that much its my land paddling deck). Nice and long and quite wide. ^_^



Secondly i started to sketch on the board with a Col erase pencil. ( wax based pencils mostly used for animation, you can get them at any art store though) i never sketch on anything without these. they barely ever smear and they erase really well.



Third step and the most tedious. I went ahead and used a .8 felt tip pen to ink the pencil lines and added detail. you go slowly and steady from left to right in order to not smear the ink ( its takes a while on some wood, and on this one it was taking forever... so it took a looong time to do. )

eventually though i got through it all:




I then went ahead and colored the whole thing with watercolors. a little tiny brush and a set of watercolors i got for 2$. lol I had to layer the colors a bit, and it came out looking fantastic. i had to go over the inks at some parts where the watercolors went over, so the tedious inking over again. lol but all this makes the lines and colors blend perfectly and gives you a cleanliness and crispness to the lines that you normally wouldnt be able to get.








and a size comparison shot. ^_^ so you guys can see how big it really was. lol the other deck in 40 x 10 with indie 215s.

thanks rodgon, i was trying to figure out how to embed the image and i think i just figured it out, although i don't know how to resize it. The board is actually just brushed on with layers of watercolor and acrylic, some of the atmosphere and airbrushed looking parts were achieved with fine spray from a toothbrush.

well your board almost scared me off into posting into the am thread. But since I'm a semi-professional artist aka full time cook, I thought i'd post in the pro thread. Seriously though your board is ridiculous! you got some serious skills man.

and dont knock yours down man. thats an amazing board as well. quite awesome! thats a style i just cant nail down, lol my mind just works differently. ^_^

mongo motion i love tribal graphics... tht is definitely sweet. i also love the shape of that board cuz you can tell its fun to ride and what good are graphics if you dont have fun on the boards when you are finished.

Im putting the finishing touches on my board... ill post it here tomorrow... technically it was finished at the very end of january though .... but unless someone has a problem with it i will still enter... and if it is DQed i will just complain the rest of the year that "my board would have totally beat rodgon for sure" LOL

Holy crap Rodgon, I don't even know how you can picture all that in your head when you're drawing it.

I'm new to the longboard community, two years now, but I love it. I teach at-risk teens in my school district and judging by the ages on this forum I'm the old man (41 years young). I built this board out of maple and red oak, dowelled and glued it, then ran it through a planer to get it thinned down to 5/8th of an inch. I cut it out with a jigsaw in the shape of a fish. I layered the tail twice and belt sanded it to create the up-slope on it. I was kind of going for an old Cadilac fin look. All the art work was drawn in pencil first and then burned into the wood with a wood-burning pen. The gold and red colors on the family crest are just sharpies. The board obviously has a lot of religious symbolism on it, as I am a believer. I taught one of my students a lot of math with this project. I had him make a longboard too. The asignment was to use images that represented who you are and what you value. So I made my board just ahead of the student so that I could teach him how to do it. I am excited to share my longboard with all of you here on this forum. Every one of the entries looks great and I am just honored to be a part of this contest. It's all gravy to me. By the way, I will be putting Original S10 trucks and 85mm Siesmic Speed Vent wheels on it. It is 60" long and is for cruising and carving. One last thing. I apologize ahead of time if this post doesn't work or link correctly to the images. I have never been a part of a forum before, posted pictures on the internet before, heck, I don't even own a cell phone, so give me some grace as I figure this stuff out. Just happy to be here.
