    Default From snowboard to longboard

A mate of mine who teaches at the local dry slope has dibs on a load of old snowboards they're gonna throw away. The plan is, as you guessed, to convert them into longboards.
I am planning to use good old GF to stiffen 'em up after shaping them.
Has anyone out there done something like this before and if so could you throw me some tips and do's and dont's

to stiffen it up, you could use an old ski. I made a 60"er and threw an old cross-counrty ski on the bottom. The ski adds great stiffness and is suprisingly light.

My first attempt is here --

I have since shortened it a couple times and taken out the extra support. It's still pretty flexy. It's now 37" with a 24" wheelbase.

With wedged Indies and Flashbacks its a blast for cruising down the street. It's a bit touchy on hills, though.

    extra support?
i see that it was a 170 at one time, so i would imagine its pretty thick in the middle, yet its still too flexy?

Yes. It was too soft. I added a piece of plywood to the bottom to stiffen it up. Later I took it off and shortened it up.

The pics don't seem to be showing up in the other thread so these should give you some idea.

I wonder what would happen if you roughed up the bottom and added a layer or two of glass on the bottom.

KON, dude, that is waaay flexy, me being 200lbs too wouldn't help. Nice looking board though.
I recon a layer of 200g/m glass either side should do the trick, if not i'll just laminate some more on and experiment a little. I wanna get the same flex as the supaflex boards.
As for free decks for all, as snowboards they are w*nk. They're old, unbranded hire boards and in all honesty you'd be better off getting one from ebay more locally instead of paying for international shipping fees I kid you not

    The quiver of the poor.

If you are lucky enough you can find old stiff snowboard. And if you are even more lucky, they are boards with metal inside (titanal) like the second picture:
slightly cambered, really stiff, perfect !...

My friend Chandler made his board out of an old Morrow foam core board. It was almost too stiff to ride as a snowboard, but it's just about right as a longboard.

It doesn't have binding inserts so it has a sheet of metal just under the topskin which probably helps with the stiffness a good bit.
