fiberglass between plys
ok well ive started working with fiberglass on some of my boards and had some succes with that, but only doing layers on the outside, now i want to try having less and less wood and more and more glass, but i was hoping to put a layer of glass on the middle of the deck and read a few walk throughs and was still left confused
any help, and any way i can do this outside of my vac bag because the decks i want to do a middle layer of glass on wouldnt fit inside my roarockit bag, if this is not possible ill have to make a new bag which i have read a bit about and doesnt seem too hard
thanx for the help

Grab wood. Brush on epoxy. Slap on fibreglass. Brush on more epoxy if fibreglass is not soaked. Slap on more wood. Clamp together.

i read the toothless one but they waid it would only work in a vac bag

How did you laminate the glass on the outside btw? Did you just slap it on with epoxy or did you press it aswell? What kind of surface will not stick to the epoxy if you want to put the sandwich in a press, but with the glass on the outside?

I just did it with my press, and my board came out fantastic. It can be done.

well i just left the outside unfinished and glassed that, i put on a layer of epoxy, then ut epoxy on the glass then laid the glass on the bottom of the deck, let iit dry and sanded it, worked great
if your adding glass to an already finished deck im not sure how well it would stick but it should, tis a chemical bond, but if you dont mind loosing the graphix then i would sand it down to the wood again

I am building boards similar to yours, Wefunk, and i am using a vert-lam wood core instead of the foamies. Does the strength that the fiberglass adds around the core depend on the thickness of the core? I know that the core will be stronger due to the added wood if you make it thicker, but does the added seperation of the fiberglass on the outside make a significant difference?
Btw... Fiberglass on the outside... only way to go. Sometimes i use a really light twill between layers, but thats it.

You can't use a press to put glass on the outside. Unless you are working with a 100% perfect mold, you will get spots where resin will pool and the lamination will be ****ed, basically. Get a TAP. Such a good value, easy to glass everything with.

but if you press the board and then lay up the glass, it makes for good times

Absolutely! The thickness (in any flat object -- e.g. a sandwich with a given glassing) determinates stiffness by the 3rd potency - so every mm counts.

Was always under the impression that glass between the inner layers bedded in epoxy provides toughness as opposed to stiffness.
A comparison in wood would be between birch and maple. Birch is a lighter, stiffer (by weight), more brittle wood while maple is tougher, heavier and more flexible.
If you want a softer flex board that can be run over by a car without breaking, you will glass the internal layers with epoxy. If you want a stiffer, springier(sp?) stronger board, that will stay that way until catastrophic failure (snapping) you will glass the outside layers (most especially the bottom layer).
Would anyone have a different take on that?

Wefunk is right. rule ot thumb, Stiffness=thickness cubed
(For the same material.)
A deck with glass in the middle is stiffer because of increased
thickness. Adding 1/16" of glass or wood to the middle increases
stiffness by the same amount.
A thin core with thick glass will flex more
(run over by car) and not break. A thick core+thin glass
will not flex as far before breaking.

ok so if i have a thinner core and thicker glass, will i get the durability, or will the flex break own over time?
