sand down the original graphic, prime it, acrylic paints, then finish up with a few coats of marine varnish.

I've done 2 acrylic paintings on a board....

the first one I put a thin layer of gesso on the plain wood, then painted on top. Then I sealed it w/ this acrylic sealant stuff I got at Michael's (art/crafts store)

The second one, I stained the wood, then did 2 coats of spray-on polyurethane. Then I painted, then I did like 6 more coats of polyurethane. After I had done like 3 of the post-acrylic urethane coats, I had to transport the board, and I noticed 2 places where the paint came off, I guess something scratched it. Anyway it looked like the acrylic paint couldn't really grab onto the urethane.

So if I did it again I would A) sand the area I was about to paint on to rough up the urethane surface first, or B) not urethane until after painting.

I will probably do B. for my next board. Acrylic is thick, unless you water it down a lot I can't think of any reason you couldn't just paint right on the deck.
