Yet more paint/stencil question(s)
(I've looked through 9 pages in this forum and nothing seems the same thing, so plz dont tell me to use the search function)
Ok, I'm gonna paint my board. Got Krylon paint for wood, board sanded, got some killer good clear coat, I just need to figure out the stencil part. My current thing is a bunch of masking tape lined up side by side, taped onto a large piece of plexi-glass, I cut out the graphic and im left with a stencil.
Now, theoreticly of course, I could just peel the masking tape off the plexiglass and put it on the board, carefully lining them up. However, there's this thing called life and it seems to screw you just about everytime you come up with something that seems good. Ok, after writing that novel, here comes the questions:
will a masking tape stencil work?
should I maybe put 2 layers so it won't just absorb the paint?
am I overreacting and shall I just give'r?

Perhaps try a few on scrap wood or cardboard to get the hang of it first ?

I think one layer of the tape will be just fine. After you apply, try coating the seams (not sure if this is the right word, but where the tape ends and the board begins) with a clear medium or gesso. Maybe even do a couple layers. This way if anything was ever going to seep under the tape and make it botchy then it will be the clear medium. Also after you do this your lines will be super crisp when you pull up the tape
good luck man, post some result photos when youre done

easier way
the masking tape will work, but try going to a local arts and crafts store, micheals- wherever. look around the airbrushing supplies for frisket paper, its designed specifically for it. or even rolls of adhesive laminade. the consistancy and ease of cutting you'll get should be worth the trip- but the spray paint will break down the stencil if you use too much. done one after another with krylon, i can usually get about five out.

probably helmsman (i think thats what its called) it worked really well when i cleared my other board. Might not be good ontop of paint, so i'll look around.
-
the problem with helmsman spar varnish is it does have a distictive yellow to it, so if the colors have a bit of yellow in them or you dont mind a little color distrotion then you can go with the helmsman varnish

We use the masking tape stencil in my board-building glass and they work great. Just go LIGHT with the spray paint (many super light coats is better than 2 heavy ones) so you don't force it to bleed. If you're staining, rub lightly, never drench and be prepared for a little bleeding, no matter what, especially if you're using water-based stain.
For clear coat, try MinWax polycrylic. It's durable, goes on easily, cleans with water and doesn't yellow.

yah i was gonna add that also, but forgot to, many light coats is better than one big one, i know its hard to resist putting on a coat that covers everything in one go, but TRUST ME its worth it in the end, and i wish i could show you my latest board, to show you that masking tape stenciles work, but its not done and i dont want to spoil it.
as for ebasil suggesting the acrylic clear, yes it works, and dosent yellow, but there are some dis-advantages to it, as one it has a lower solids content then the urethane, so inorder to get the same clear thickness your gonna have to put on more coats. So if wetsanding the final thing to make it glass smooth urethane is better, unless you dont mind slight roughness to the clear coat(im insane over that so yah). but thats that , and make sure you scruff the surface inbetween coats, or you wont get proper adhersion and could have one layer lift over time.

ok, just painted my board, and when i was waiting for it to dry, i tried a practice masking tape stencil on a scrap piece of wood. Well... it bleed a little, and the graphic im doing, I want perfect straight clean lines. Im gonna try and find that adheisive laminate stuff somewhere. I think i might use that spray clear coat because i dislike brush strokes.
-
when you cut out your stencil do you go around all the edges rubbing it down, if not do it, that and doing very light coats, you will avoid bleed through

yeah i rubbed down. i just effin gav'er with 1 huge coat, so thats a prob, i'll try a few small coats

run yer fingers real hard all over the edges of the mask.. helps stop bleeding. having a hard rubber roller to use instead dont hurt either.

ive heard that if you run a razor down the edge lightly, it will stop the bleeding.
