Default My latest Press - a slide deck (lots of photos)

    Hi fishes.

I have already posted this on the lush forum but as I have taken so much info from this here forum I thought I'd give some back.....

So I present to you all my latest press. ok it IS simple but it sure does work well.

    Here it is dismantled:

And how I built the wedge to form the kicktail:

Here is a board in press shot:

And a kick tail in the press being clamped:

    It results in this:

This I then cut, stained, painted, varnished and gripped and I ended up with a 38 inch deck with a tasty tiki face...Nice.

This thing is the bomb!! When combined with 65mm Lush Cannonballs its a slip sliding beast.

This press was really easy to make, the only slightly hard bit was getting the right angle on the wedge support (to make the kicktails).

To do this I set the angle of my hand held circular saw to the desired angle and cut the piece. It was then easy to screw onto this a bit of left over 6mm ply which then formed the wedge.

One benefit of doing it this way (as you can see in the pics) is that i was able to clamp the kick tail to the press. I did not do this in my 1st board from the press and it the layers seperated a bit.

This worked a right treat for me, 3 bits of 4mm birch plywood, some titebond III glue, and hey presto a nice slide deck.

Hope this inspires someone to go do summit.....

awesome build man. i should be trying this within this month. i was pretty skeptic in placing a kick on this board im about to make, but seeing the job you did with the method you used, i'll give it a shot.

    thanks for sharing bro...

Nice dude! I think I'm going to have to copy that press design when I make my slide board.

lets just say your method is way easier and more effective than mine
    would have been.

    Hi

Cool press you have got there.

Could i use 7 maple 1/16th inch (1.6mm) veneers in this type of press?

    Cheers
    Will

    i'm stealing this press design.

using maple veneers in a press like this would probably not get even pressure in areas like the concave. maybe if you screwed ply wood in the concave area and to the top piece that presses it in the concave you would get better pressure throughout the board. birch plywood gives more leeway with the even of pressure.

    Yeah, Daniel is right.

As plywood already has stiffness to it, when you press it like thisthe pressure is distributed evenly.

In my opinion to use individual plys you need to make a more refined press or use vac bagging.

Ok Brodie, that's it I have to try and press my own deck now, this looks like the nicest simple press I have seen for a n00b builder to put together. I've just printed all this out, time to start researching materials...

ya, ive used this type of pres sfor dropped spped decks. so simple! and i lvoe how the bolts/nuts cost so much less than clamps. just remember, when you drill the holes for bolts, make sure you make them big enough that you dont have to pound them in, (i leanerd that the hard way)

Although i really enjoy many brands boards...i have a deep feeling for homemade ones!!!
Nice board man...rough press with rough techniques equals a damm board...keep on
Do you think you could put on a press an 10mm thickness ply without gluying nothing and that it would keep the shape?
    Cheers
