You dont, home depot wood is not what you want.
Use the yellowpages online and look for plywood stores that serve furniture/cabinet making. If you want to come down to LA, in culver city is a place called Anderson Plywood. Found that one online and they sell all the woods I need to build properly.
a 5x5 Baltic Birch 1/8 inch ply is like 11 dollars.

^ it's not fine for your standards, unless your standards include the board snapping the first time you ride it.
You need to find a woodworking supply place, and ask for baltic/finnish birch. If they don't know what you're talking about, or say we have regular birch plywood, leave.
Typical plywood from home depot is cheap, filler wood surrounded by a thin veneer of birch. Actual baltic/finnish birch is solid, the whole way through, with birch.
Big difference.

What you by at Lowes/Home Depot os cosmetic and far from structural(what you need)
You can't judge a book by it's cover!!!!

Yeah, I don't want to see you making a "my board just snapped after I spent hours and $$$ finishing it cuz I used wood from Home Depot" thread, like we've seen here *many* times before. This question comes up all the time, and the answer is still that home depot wood sucks. It is only "baltic birch" on the outside two plies.
For the same price (or better), you can get what you need at a real wood shop. If they're nice, they will even rip it into strips for you. I have my source rip it into 10" or 12" wide strips, 60" long for me, which saves a step when I get home and makes it easier to fit in the car. Be sure if they cut it, the cuts are along the grain. You need the grain running the length of the wood, not the width.
first attempt
what kind of wood?
home depot wood
dont buy lowes wood
etc. ad nauseum.
I was hoping to find one with pics, I remember one that the guy had spent a good bit of time making a checkered graphic, got it gripped, stood on it the first time, and *snap!*

i buy wood from that place Sho was talking about.
http://www.andersonplywood.com/
prolly a half hour drive from you. they have a number of different birches, make sure you ask for baltic.
and you dont even need a truck, they'll chop it up into perfect press size planks right there.
