    Default Flat vs. Concave

Hey, I asked this at anither thread.......

What's the difference between a flat deck and a cincave deck in terms of ride quality? I work at a millwork shop and have a CNC to use whenever I want.

I was thinking of doing something out of solid and abit of an old school feel. Solid maple or oak and with a nice dark stain and lacquer finish.

    Thoughts?

A flat deck will normally have more flex than a deck with concave.

concave helps your feet to grip when you are turning. It gives your feet something to push up against so that they do not just slide off the board.

Flat boards tend to have more flex to them compared to boards with concave, so it can be a smoother ride.

Concave boards lock your feet in, which is good for carving, where with flat boards theres a different feel during carves.

Some people prefer flat boards for board walking just cause it feels more natural (like walking on the ground)

As to the board you're planning on making, it sounds like it would be fine. What are the specs?

Haven't decided on the specs just yet. I'm just tossing around ideas right now to come up with another deck to add to our Boardeli line. Right now we're just running limited graphic edition pintails. So i'm hoping to come up with something simple and a nice contrast to those. Something that's 'easy going'.

Might toss out a few sketches on the forum and let the people decide.

I personally cant stand flat decks, uggh, i feel like i'm gonna slip off at any moment and i dont feel too confident. With a concaved deck, i feel like my feet are locked in, and my confidence skyrockets. My buddy that i ride with, loves the feel of flat decks, and hes pretty damn good, so i guess its like most things in skateboarding, its all about preference.

So true. What one guy loves the next guy hates. Gotta say that's what I love about longboarding, the variety. There's something for everyone eh?

I'll probably do a flat and concave version, then let the asphalt decide.

baltic birch is the way to go (unless you're using maple plies)

Flat-Cave is 100x better than concave, but its ####### stiff, if i want flex; i'd go for the flat!

I have grown to love the way Baltic Birch rides, flexy or stiff..
It's got a kind of "woof" to it... It's not as hard as maple,
but it's got it's own wonderful qualities..
The natural flex of BB is very nice, it's snappy, but not
overly quick, it's a mellow comfortable flex...
I dare ya', make yourself a flat baltic birch board, you'll love it!
I use tread tex on my boards, and they are grppy as hell,
I don't even miss the concave...Your feet say put..
But I do love concave for pool/vert boards... Gotta have it there!
But for cruising, carving, pumping, flat is extremely comfortable and easy
    on the feet...

Flat + 4" wide BB stringer = Most comfortable DH board I have ridden to date.

We got something layed out and will run it on 1/2" baltic birch. I'm looking at a length of
50" x 9.25" with the board coming to a soft point at either end. Kind of a throwback to 50's surfboards. I'll see how that handles and will probably do another with a kicktail.

So we decided on a 58" x 10" dimension for this flat deck.

Any suggestions for a wheel base?
