please help!
I too thought about doing exactly what you want to do to my Vangaurd. After some deep thought my idea was to do like you said and make the wheelbase shorter to allow for more strength. what I was going to do was just move the truck inboard enough so I could still use the existing inside mounting holes, as the new outside mounting holes and just re-drill new inside holes. (If that makes sense). Then cut the ends of the board down to proper measurements. I would suggest making the wheel cut-outs as small as possible to maintain as much structural matterial left into the deck. Maybe even use a offset wheel to make the wheels stick out further so the wheel cut outs wouldn't have to be as extreme. Drill out the deck for the large "old school" truck pattern for sure, then grind off the re-inforcing ribs off the base plates of your Randal trucks and make the drop holes as tight as possible. I haven't done my Vangaurd yet for the same reason you stated cause I'm not sure how it would feel, as in how it would affect the integrity of the deck so I'm a little hesatent myself. I've done a few boards and a few turned out really good, and a few of my early ones broke after a few rides. so I guess its a big gamble. I would say practise on a piece of plywood first, then maybe go for broke... Good luck, if you do end up trying it, post the pics when its done and tell us how it feels..
