Re: Graphics Contest Entry Thread
He'll do it too.
So all parties involved in said spat let it drop. I realize some feelings got hurt on this. I try to get everyone to finish within the specified time but there are always straglers. So I give them a grace period. Not exactly fair to the ones that followed the rules and finished on time but giving these straglers the extra time usually ends up giving us a better contest. More entrants. More boards to look at. Now once the poll is created it's over. That's it. I've run a bunch of these contest on here for years and we've played around with them to get things as close to right as we can. You can't make everyone happy but we try for the majority. The prizes always ruin these things. All my contests are just for fun. If someone offers up a prize great. But never expect that there will be one. That has happened. These contests are for personal enjoyment, advancement of the art, to show off your skills and the bragging rights of winning. If in the end you get something for it, cool. If not, you end up with a killer board that you can be proud of because you made it yourself. As far as being a professional and entering these contest. Historically that can cost you in the votes. People will hold a pro to a much higher standard. It all comes out in the wash, as they say.
Now we only have a few more days for everyone to get their entries up. I will make the poll late friday night. I live in the Eastern time zone in the US if that helps. Look for it sometime after midnight. That will technically have the voting starting on March 8 my time. The poll will run for 7 days. Most votes wins. Good luck and be good to each other.

Re: Graphics Contest Entry Thread
Well said Sniffeless! The art process in this doesn't end until the photos are taken, downloaded and sent to this thread. As stated earlier: Friday is the deadline for the eligible participants. I'm down with that, and like usual fashion expect mine on the last day before the deadline.
It's freakin art people! I have never met an artist that says their a professional. Artist just do what is inherent, and most of them have no concept of time anyway.

I for one have experienced all of the above especially being labeled as a pro (which i still dont consider myself as) But prizes are just that prizes, aka bonus's cause sniffless nailed it, these contest are ment for fun and progressing your skills and the skills of other.
Heck i was gonna try and make the deadline but that wasn't gonna happen then i was gonna do a different board, and that also wasn't gonna happen, then i F-ed the prize board, so i build a new one, and its sitting behind me just wait for me to mask the sucker so i can paint it, hopefully ill have it done by the time voting is done.
But i might have an idea , but ill leave it at that
The only competition in life is yourself, but be warned it loves to throw challenges in your face, just to make it a fun experience..

Re: Graphics Contest Entry Thread
rodgon- amazing stuff, your style reminds me of a cat out of the UK I saw on conceptart.org, check out lorenzo's stuff at blinktwice studios, i think you might dig.
all the bickering aside the field of entrants is very strong and I think it should be a good contest. "ars artis gratia".

Re: Graphics Contest Entry Thread
I agree with sniffeless too. These contests are intended to be fun, do something creative, and push yourself to improve etc.
This is the first board I have ever painted, I really like it, and I deffinitly look forward to painting more boards I had fun doing it just to do it, and this contest is a great way to show it and get some feedback. The prize is just a bonus!
It's up to everyone to toss in their own vote, and we're all allowed to take the process/method/excecution etc. into consideration, and just vote for who you like! There is some good competition here... it's awesome to see such great creativity!

Re: Graphics Contest Entry Thread
wow, very nice for all, each and every board already posted looks totally professional.
I especially have a soft-spot for all of the wood-burning, now that takes major skill and patience.
Well, here is a collaboration project I did with one of my friends. The board is a bamboo and foam core board, one of my polypropylene/PEG prototype builds, and it was laying out when he just started sketching on it. The sketching in pencil led to acrylic paint:

which then led to some touch-up with paint pens

One of my house-mates is pretty big into aquatic pets, and has a killer fish tank, which is probably the inspiration of this artwork. With 5+ layers of spray acrylic, I decided to use a matte/satin finish to preserve the acrylic texture, because I think it adds another level of detail to the art, bringing out the colors and the hand-made human imperfections.

Re: Graphics Contest Entry Thread
just to make things clear...i did do this in the month of feb. i got a lil ahead of myself and posted for the thread a lil early o well. there are a bunch of great boards in this thread, very stiff competition....i can dig it. i also did some pinstiping this month on the other side of this board (griptape side) but i dont kno how to link past threads on here.... ok, here we go:
the process: tape and oil-based paint marker to lay down the stripes. then acrylic paint and paint brushes for the background. taped off the triangles, painted with acrylic paint. now for the fancy part: drew the turtle star thing on regular printing paper, rubbed the back with white graphite, then redrew the thing on the board leaving a graphite transfer. painted the outline on with acrylic paint marker, then colored between the lines with more paint. LASTLY, went back with a black paint and realllly thin paint brush to paint in the shading. finished her up with some clear coat polycrylic and foam brush. thats it. all hand drawn and hand painted.
This is a tribute to M.C. Escher, the orginal artist of "gravity" (the turtle star thing) and "liberation" (from triangles to birds). had to give props to him.
pinstiping was all free hand with acrylic paint and paintbrush.....last pic shows the grip job with silica sand
"so i see u lookin at me lookin at u...i hope u like ridin the wood as much as i do" LMAO, some things never get old.

Yes I agree, I thought this thread was about having fun and getting show your work off and getting great advice from some really fine craftsmen. This is why I entered.
