my completed eastbilt dancer
i posted pictures of mine in someone else's thread, but i'd like to get it out in its own thread so that more people can see it and give some feedback.
the only pictures i have so far don't have the grip tape, but the board is done. i'll post a few more shots with the grip job (which i personally think is pretty sweet) a little later.
this is an eastbilt blank i ordered without the clearcoat. my sister did the bottom side (the more abstract looking side) and i did the top (the more geometric looking side).
time estimate for completion (spread out over the whole winter):
order deck online: 10 min
wait for deck to arrive: ~10 days
unpack deck: 1 min
pencil drawing top: 1-2 hours
wood burning top: 4-6 hours
pencil drawing bottom: 4-6 hours
wood burning bottom: 8-10+ hours
clear-coats: ~10 minutes per coat with 12-24 hours drying time between coats
3 coats on top
4 coats on bottom
**TOP**
(the mess around the truck holes is clearcoat with newspaper stuck to it... some dripped through the holes. don't set your board on newspaper when coating it.)

*BOTTOM*

(sister's name is rachael, if you were wondering why it's written on the board)

lemme know what you think...

Re: my completed eastbilt dancer
that looks amazing. I would definitely like to try some wood burning sometime soon since I tend to have a lot of spare time on my hands. that turned out great!
I bet you definitely have one of the most unique longboards on your block now very inspirational.
I just bought an oldschool style blank from eastbilt a few days ago that I'm going to be making a copy of the jason jessee sungod deck from santa cruz. I can't wait to get it in the mail and get started!

much thanks man. i am really happy with the way it turned out too. its definitely one of a kind around here.
i was thinking about getting one of the oldschool style boards a little later on this summer. either that or the winger swallowtail... too bad everything is out of stock in the longboard department because of the whole wood source conflict thing.

Re: my completed eastbilt dancer
the winger swallowtail looks sweet. I'm really hating the this out of stock thing too.
I dont know if it's just my area but I can't seem to find any reasonable veneer anywhere around here in Illinois.

Re: my completed eastbilt dancer
Brilliant pics! I have an eastbilt as well, tho I used paint..I really like the effect you got - it's like a tattooed deck : ) did you use the same tool, as you have thin and think lines? also, is your grip black? I thought on first glance it was blue, but looking again was not sure. One last question, did you practice first on another piece of wood, or did you just trace your pencil outline and it went fine?

1. thank you.
2. my sister used a couple different tools (predominantly the standard wood burning tip with like an angled point) on the bottom. i used a bigger, rounded kind of tip for the top. our wood burner came with like 6 tips.
3. we did very little practicing on another piece of wood... just drew with the pencil and then dove in tracing it. it went fine... not flawlessly by any means, but we just figured minor imperfections would add to the beauty of it. by the end of doing all the burning though, we had a pretty good hang of it.
4. the grip tape is black... just weird lighting.

Re: my completed eastbilt dancer
Cool man I painted my dancer and all that too, it took forever aswell!!! About a whole summer I spent drawing on it here and there. Yours looks really good man, i like the burnt wood thing. Here is a link to a thread of pictures with my board. Really fun dancer!! I call it my "Livin' Large, LongboardLarry rip off" haha sorry larry!!! Just the top is where I went for that look, the bottom took the whole summer and was a very good time to draw on.

ha! i was on acid for most of the drawing part of my design as well. nice! i didn't wanna play with the wood burner while i was tripping though.
that board looks sick though man. did you clear grip it? if so, how'd you go about doing that? i could only find translucent grip tape that would have dulled some of the detail, no really transparent tape.

When I did my eastbilt I used the clear grip, which I think as you point out, is somewhat translucent. I am not sure there is a totally see thru tape, as the nubbly surface of the grip ia bound to give a distortion to the image. In my case, my painting is a bit rough, so it was a plus to have it softened, and I did a dragonfly, so it made it a bit more shimmery which I liked too. I can see how you would not want to take the edge off your work, I think the varnish was the way to go.
