Would you all be interested in a how-to thread for 2 wheeled boards?
I don't want to say dirt surfer because their boards are 10X better made than my home made ones, but would any of you be interested in a how to for 2 wheeled metal boards?
They're easy to make, and you need a welder, grinder, pipe bender and some metal piping as well as a kid's bike.
I don't however, want this to be a replacement for dirt surfers. Their boards are made differently, with a lot more engineering involved.
These are, however, a cheap alternative to find out if you like the 2 wheeled metal over 4 wheeled wood.
You haven't done slalom til you've dodged hobos and students to get to class.

I just wanted to be careful because I feel like it might take business away from dirtsurfer or infringe on some patent I didn't know about or something. They're a good company and I don't want it to come off as that.

If you're worried about offending the company, why would you ask here?
And after a hundred responses should you feel that this community wants a thread about making one, all you've accomplished is getting permission from a hundred people who probably aren't important at all.
Just do it, and make it interesting. And really, you don't seem like you're just aiming to bash on someone else, so i'm sure it'd be well received.
Cheers
Fifi: They say people don't believe in heroes anymore. Well damn them! You and me, Max, we're gonna give them back their heroes!
Max: Ah, Fif. Do you really expect me to go for that crap?
Fifi: You gotta admit I sounded good there for a minute, huh?

I just wanted to make that clear beforehand. I know dirtsurfer couldn't send a cease and desist for posting a guide for a skateboard thats 2 wheeled, but I could upset people who might be very loyal to the company here.
And while I really don't care if someone gets upset, it would be a waste of my time to write a guide and have it bashed up and down because they think I'm trying to copycat a DS.
Kind of in the same way of how there was a wave a few years ago of people trying to make an evo JUST because they didn't want to buy one.

Cool!
I'm assuming the fork hits the frame in the front before the tire rubs out - right? So there's like 1-2" of turn in the front? That's enough to steer it? I'm only asking because I've never ridden or seen one in person.

Yes, I replied to myself :P
It's got 4-5 inches of swing each way before the forks hit the frame, so there's no wheel bite. It's enough to steer it; it steers like a 60in with randals on it. Not very tight but not ludicrously wide.
It's very surfy, and I haven't ridden the production one so I don't know. You can really feel the board pivot around the back wheel when you turn. Pushing it is a challenge, since from a stop it's very unstable, but around 5mph it becomes stable and manageable.
I just got a new set of tires for it, and the guys at the bike shop nearly shat a brick. Not only did I ride it over there, I locked it with the bikes :P The dirt surfer is cheaper than a board to ride though. New tires were only $20! Also I put the bike clip on the board so it's easy to stabilize when pushing.
I'll try to post up the guide sometime this weekend.
Oh, and it has no brakes on it yet. Right now I either jam my foot between the wheel and deck, or grab the wheel with my hand. Thats why I haven't ridden it down any hills and only so fast as I can run off it.

About how much does it cost to fab one of these up? 50-60 bucks?
I'm down.
If you can't be good, be careful

70-80, but thats because the grating I used for the deck was pretty expensive. The majority of it is square steel stock and sprinkler piping (meant for 400psi water so it's strong).
That, and a kids bike. I got mine for free.
Oh, and the bike clip would have been $2 but I told the dude at the bike shop what it was for and he gave it to me.
