Default Entry thread for Build Off Contest #2

Here is the official entry thread for Build Off Contest #2.
    PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING!

Post the pictures of your entry here. Only entries posted in this thread will be considered.
This contest was a themed contest. Only boards made using the vertical lamination (v-lam) process will be considered for the contest. The entry board however does not have to be 100% v-lam. You are aloud the use of other materials as a coat or final layer. However the majority of the entry board must be vertically laminated. It will be up to the organizer to make the judgement call on all entries if the required technique was used.
The organizer holds the right to disqualify any entry that the organizer feels fails to meet the requirements or is not a serious entry. This would be the Karrot Klause.

    Photos for entries requirements:
-Please show the board in the process of being built (in the press).
-Show the board after the press but before shaping.
-Finished product from two different angles.
You can show more of the process if you like and are encouraged to do so.

This thread will be open for a week. After that week the thread will be closed and a poll thread will be created for voting. There is also a panel of judges this time that will review all entries. The poll is the popular vote. The judges are the technical vote. If there are any problems during the poll it will be forfeit and shut down and all results will be based on the judges vote.

The voting begins May 5 or 6. Sorry to be vague but I will be competing in a slalom race and that is the earliest I will be able to get the poll up.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

    I guess I'll go first.
Here is my v-lam entry. The board is the marriage of Mr. Scrap to Ms. Trash. I had some purpleheart left over from a previous project and scored a nice pallet that was destined to reside in a landfill until fate interviened. I thought it might be a fun project to turn garbage into something useful.

    Overall dims are: 30" x 8 5/8" x 3/4"
    wb of 18.5"

    i'll go second

construction from top to bottom is:

4 layers 6 oz biax glass
balsa wood core, 21 3/8x3/8x36" balsa pieces, 2 3/8x1/2x36" balsa, 2 3/8x3/8x36" spruce (where bolt holes go)
1 1/16" cross grain maple ply
    4 layers 6oz biax glass

rails wrapped with biax glass too

    specs:
    L:36"
    W: 10" (at widest)
    wheelbase: 30"

concave is done via foam, exactly for my feet when im tucking.

board is meant for DH, length may seem a bit short, but WB is comparable to most boards out there.

board is ROCK solid for my 180lbs. I unfortunately havent ridden it yet b/c during the week i have too much stuff to do, but soon enough i'll go ripping with this.

here are pics of the building process:

    all the pieces:

first press, core+bottom cross ply+1 layer of glass to soak up excess epoxy

out of bag and shaped, this constitutes my "core"

    adding glass on the bottom

rails wrapped, excess glass trimmed off via belt sander

bottom glass layer sanded and shaped all nice

    glassing top

    in bag

    out of bag and trimmed/shaped

    my "brand"

    bolt holes drilled

adding foam concave (via cblock kit from pps/sk8kings)

all gripped and ready to rock!

bottom will be drawn on, but for now, it's a board building contest, not a graphics contest

    proof this board is fast

i've been riding this around a decent aamount these past few weeks, it's sturdy as hell, turns and handles like a dream, no problems with stability into the 30mph range (havent had time to goto better hills)
    vive le freeride!!

    Rayne!

Just curious, with the v-laminations do any of you guys use dowels? Seems like it would add strength.

Well I’ve always wanted a build a Vlam, this will replace the Eastbilt 60” that I just couldn’t get used to. Woods are Rock Maple, White Oak and Cherry (a blond a brunette and a red head) with a Zebrawood tail block. All but the Zebrawood I got from a local mill that sells furniture grade lumber…this is to say I probably paid too much but it’s very high quality lumber. The Zebrawood is from my stash of exotic lumber chunks. I would have preferred to use Cocobolo but this piece was really close the final size to start with and shaping Cocobolo is a PITA so Zebrawood it is. My dad has a very nice wood shop that I had been wanting to get acquainted with…this board is my way of using nearly every tool in the shop. I spent about an hour plotting out a ton of different layouts before deciding on 9 layers. Having a table saw and a joiner made getting everthing to the glue up point was faster than I was expecting. Saying that I overbuilt this is an understatement…I initially planned on biscuiting around the trucks but then I saw a broken Vlam last weekend and started plotting out a pattern that that would strengthen it wouldn’t be bad…well I went overboard, there are 38 biscuits in the board not including the one hold the tail block on. Then again I weigh 215lbs so there is really nothing wrong with overbuilding and besides it runs in my family. I also used way too much glue and which I got mocked for by everyone in my family but I didn’t have a brush so I was applying glue by hand. Cleaning up the dried glue sucked until I got enough off to be able to use the planner then it went fast. Shaping was easy on the bandsaw and I actually cut it out nearly even on both sides requiring little evening out. I biscuited out the tail and glued the block on. Routered a 1/2'” round over on the top and a wedge on the bottom and then sanded it for a coupe of hours one day and a couple more then next day….I do love my Festool orbital sander. Next come coat after coat of Polycrylic with wet sanding in between…I think the bottom has about 10-12 coats the top 4 then two coats with Tread Tex salt shaker’d on wet poly for a total of 6. The Complete has Angel R7 (Force clones) and Pink 7-0’s…I still haven’t got a good bushing setup on this but I will figure something out. it skates soft and smooth

And of course the oh so patient shop dog who watched me the entire time
