Re: Build Off Contest Entry Thread 2008 Open Theme
This is a mini I made earlier this month. It is made out of 2 layers of graham crackers and 1 large bar of irish spring soap. All this is held together with a mixture of 1 part shampoo, 2 parts honey and 1 part Mas slow hardener. It was designed to be a ray of light in a child's mind if he curses too much and the mom wants to wash his mouth out with soap.
It is about 1.5 Princess Sparkles long and 8 inches wide. Inches because lets be honest, centimeters are gay. It is set up with 1/8 inch shock pads, random hardware, bones swiss, alligators, cutdown G&S trucks from the 80s and Khiro bushings.
The paint is a picture of a hurricane to honor this hurricane season. The top is clear grip in front and a surfboard traction pad in the back. As my dog said on her blog, we used a grey camo traction pad so I can pretend that beer runs to the 7-11 are secret missions.
I made it to ride like a Flexdex Grenade, but with more of a surfboard shape. It is stiff as heck, even with all my pockets full of limes so I added rocker to simulate the Grenade's flex. Not to mention that rocker sounds much cooler than camber.

With people who may be more fun to look at than me:

O.k. here is my my entry. I am one of those old dudes that started skating before the introduction of plywood boards and therefore I hold V-lams very near and dear to my heart. The majority of my riding these days is restricted to cruising and carving with my 6 and 10 year old daughters so that is what I build for. Since I am a classic myself I shoot to recreate the look of the early longboard surfers used in the 40's, 50's, and 60's.
The main problem with V-lams is that they give off a stiff ride, and if you plane them down to where they give you flex you run the chance of breaking along the lamination. This could be solved by laminating the upper half to a piece of ply, however I want my boards to be a true V-lam. So to solve this I build the boards using two separate laminations (upper/lower) and insure that none of the laminations from either the upper or lower line up. And unlike other V-lams, I laminate them with a camber.
For the top of the board I alternated 1 inch pieces of Purple Heart and Maple, with two 1/4 inch Poplar stringers all laminated with Titebond III.
The bottom of the board is made up of three 2-1/2 inch pieces of Poplar and two 1 inch pieces of Purple Heart.
Both layers are plained down to 1/4 inch before being laminated together.
After the two layers are laminated together I fiberglass the bottom.
The result is an incredibly strong board with a nice smooth ride that pumps and carves great.

The Purple Heart on the bottom reacted to the resin differently from urethane on the bottom. The top is a very dark purple while, the bottom stringers has more red to it.
That's it. Thanks for looking.
great board. i like boards that have a little engineering ingenuity. i predate plywood boards as well and think v-lams are some of the prettiest boards you can build. i take 2 boards, that i built for the v-lam contest earlier this summer, to skateparks and let the kids ride them, the 1977 retro 291/2" long with halftracks and tunnel rocks gets a workout all nite long. it's cool to see kids so stoked on our old equiptment and riding them really well.

Re: Build Off Contest Entry Thread 2008 Open Theme
Wasnt sure if i was going to get this done in time, but i have just! my build is a bamboo, fibreglass and carbon speedboard, which a bunch of will hopefully be made in the near future to sell.
First up we made a mold for the concave out of concrete. Next, layed up the bamboo and fibreglass and placed it in the mould.
After 12 hours, we pulled the blank out, but there was a bit of an issue. The resin on the top and between the layers of bamboo had gone off, but the bottom hadn't. the deck very nearly got thown in the corner, but i decided i didnt want to give up on it, and waste the materials. so i cut the shape of the board and then set about removing the bottom layer of un cured resin and glass, by peeling it off using some pliers. the original plan was to run some carbon stringers, but i gave in and decided to do a complete carbon bottom i layed up the carbon, without using a bag, and im super impressed with the results (ill put up a how to later on)
Once the carbon had cured, i trimmed off the excess and got to work sanding the edges, wheel wells and cutting the drop though mounts. next i masked out the logo and painted it with some silver car touch up paint and then mixed up some resin and did a thin coat on the bottom of the board to try and fill some of the imperfections.
Then came the wetsanding, what a bitch of a job that was! once i was happy with how it looked it was clear coat time. there are around 5 coats of clear, with a light wet sand in between each coat.
And the finished product!!!! Im extremely happy with how it turned out for my first time at using carbon and gloss, and especially considering i was going to throw it out! oh yeah, board details, it is 1000mm long, 275mm at its widest and constructed from triax glass, 3 sheets of bamboo and double bias carbon.
cheers. ash.
