Re: New Building Equiptment
Sweet! Happy Birthday indeed.
I have a question, hoping someone can help. I'm looking to get a saw but know almost nothing of such tools. Don't get me wrong, I could operate it with proper safety equipment after getting to know it, but as far as a purchase goes I am lost.
I was hoping for a saw that can both shape (Scroll, I presume) and cut accurately on long measurements in the way a table saw would. For things like thin stripped V-Lam goodness and also to cut long veneers into measured planks. Could a scroll saw handle this kind of thing also?
I tried a search and as usual most threads weren't helpful.
Thanks!

Deffinitly this.
Asuming you're not needing to cut full ply's in half or anything.
Bandsaw blades are cheap!
And availible in lots of different sizes so you can more easily make straight cuts, or complex shapes.
Its also a pretty safe machine.
Just make sure you get one thats big enough to fit your work piece, and has a guide rail option for thoes straight cuts.

A band saw, okay. Thanks fellas. I'm hoping to get one for Christmas or find a decent used one. So I'll keep an eye out for one with a guide rail, anything else that might help? Any preferred brands people have that are superior to others? Anyone got links?

It all depends on how much you're looking to spend. I personally love the Rikon plainly because i would like to use it for resaw, and it has a very tall throat for that purpose (cutting say a 2x8 into 2 1x8 pieces). Though it isn't the cheapest you can get, it is modestly priced for the quality and features. It is available in both 110 and 230volt.
For a cheaper bet i like the Delta, though not as full-featured it still has the same idea as the Rikon.
To save even more i'd look used, you might be able to get something like a Jet for the same price as the Delta.
Of any of these options, there are always smaller options available, but i have found that the 14-16" is a pretty solid size, though it does take up a pretty good amount of shop real estate, it is considerably less than any table saw.
Sorry to say that I personally don't always like craftsman tools, most of them are rebranded versions of other tools. One of their scroll saws is technically identical to a Hitachi, though costs less because it doesn't have the stand. I do have good luck with delta tools, Rikon is HIGHLY praised by those that use them, and Jet is pretty much world-renowned for high-end tools.
Really, go out and take a look... see what your budget allows and go from there. As noted before, be sure to pick up several blades. Most come with a fence, and many are easily upgraded.

Your best cheap option would be an OLD American made Delta.
The new ones are all made in china...
But the old ones are BUILT!
Get it used, and you can probably get it for less then a lower quality new one.

Re: New Building Equiptment
I ended up getting a smaller new one, Mastercraft I believe, which I set up today. It has a guide and a titling table with an extension. How precise do the little guides and the bearings right behind the blade have to be? It took me forever to get all that set up close to what looks to be properly. I also can't seem to get the blade to be exactly center of both top and bottom wheels. The top looks good but the bottom seems just a bit off, is this going to cause me problems?
Just thought I'd ask this stuff in here. I don't really know anyone with enough knowledge to come take a look, and I don't want to go find a new forum to post in there and look dumb all over again. Thanks.
