    Can't go wrong...

Hard maple, which is what common skateboards and many longboards are made of, is harder than just about any common hard-wood.

Go for it. Don't expect the most incredible ride of your life, though.

sounds perfectly fine to me, if you want a concave you can cut the wood at an angle.

You may even want to try some water bending for some camber =] you can actually do it with solid wood.

Length and type of wood are everything.

Making something relatively short out of very hard wood is fine.

Making an 80" longboard out of 1/4" pine? Not such a great idea.

If you want to go for an authentic oldschool style, oak, ash, or birch were the most common woods used in the mid 70s, with oak being the most popular. I personally preferred ash, since it was lighter and felt a little livelier, but it has a tendency to splinter after taking a few impacts to the nose and rails. Oak does as well, but not as bad as ash. The main drawback to using one solid piece of wood is that it is more likely to split lengthwise, often through the truck holes, than a laminated deck...

i made one seemed solid but after about 2 weeks the wood cracked at the trucks lengthwise so dont expect it too last forever
