Here is the place, oh ye faithful.
This is where you post up your entries for the contest.
We want to see a few pictures of the entry board in various stages of building.
At the very least the following.
1. Materials in construction before the press.
2. In the press or what have you that you used. Solid piece cut outs just throw in another pic of the board in the cutting process.
3. Coming out of the press/prefinishing shot.
4. Finished product.
ONLY ONE ENTRY PER PERSON!
More than one entry and I decide which one goes up for vote or total elimination.
Only entries I deem to be serious entries will be considered for the contest. See the Karrot Klause.
You have until August 9 to get your entries up and posted .
Once I begin the process of the poll it will be too late to enter.
If the voting in the poll gets out of hand or screwy, I hold the right to cancel the vote and defer to a panel of judges to come up with a winner.
This is all for fun. Fun and bragging rights. Fun, bragging rights and the promotion of the art of board building. I make no promise of prizes, fame or eternal salvation. This is just a for fun internet thing. Take it for what it is but please show some respect for the hard work our builders put in to their boards.
So lets see what you got!

Re: Build Off Contest Entry Thread 2008 Open Theme
i'll go first. Just finished the board yesterday, i recently made a board with a stained design so i decided for this one to combine stain and paint i also wanted to try out a new shape. The Board is made of three layers of 1/8th BB with fiberglass between the layers and on the bottom. It was pressed in my wodden press to give it some nice camber. Its about 43" long with about 1" of camber I rode it all day and its been great especially with the new paris 180s and retro 70mm zigzags. heres some picturess
concept drawing
computer mockup
pics of the press
pressed and cutout
bottom stained
top stained
bottom all stained and painted
top completes with tread tex as clear grip
bottom finished
camber shots
and two more just for fun
well i hope you guys like it, it took me quite a while to make (about two hours for each set of leaves alone), but very worth it of course
Re: Build Off Contest Entry Thread 2008 Open Theme
Hey,
This is the sweetest new sugar from Sugar Boards. The first prototype drop-thru speedboard. A little while ago I saw the 'wefunk' boards. Alex I'm truly amazed. The technology behind the design inspired me to make my very own version.
So this is what I've came up with.
Designed to accommodate large wheels( I found some speedboards, set-up with soft bushing and large wheels get wheelbite easily), absorb plenty of bumps and have a nice wide platform. Designed to be as close to the trucks as possible.
Construction consists of two cores. First the ply core. Capped in glass to provide a torsionally stiff deck. Second the Vertically Laminated core. Provides great dampening properties and longitudinal strength. Each capped in separate fiberglass caps.
Vacuum laminated and heat cured.
So here's the photo's: Click for bigger Images.
Concave being vac laminated:
V-Lam core planned and sanded ready for lamination:
Cores Laminated:
Shaped, sanded, more glass, drilled...
Part way through the clear coat process:
Finally final product:
Before Grip:
I've been riding as much as I can, and honestly it rides amazing. It has a bit more flex than a hellcat. Soft flex until all your weight is on it, then it goes stiff. Gives a great responsive ride through corners and drifts. Accelerating you faster. Absorbs plenty, but still feels solid. Wwaayyy light. It fits large wheels with out a problem. The concave isn't anything extreme. It provide a great locked in feeling with out any pain. Nacho and myself were testing it on a local hair pin, and it corners real well. Straight line, also great. So far the only improvement will be to the drop through hole. I'm not sure whether it will be able to fit holey's, but that will be fixed on the next proto.
I've been riding Randal 180's flipped (painted by myself!), red holey bushings, 76mm Blue Hawgs and Blue Tunnel Tarantula's.
Next up will be a top mount speedboard. Watch out!
Re: Build Off Contest Entry Thread 2008 Open Theme
the board is a foamcore speedboard inspired by the rayne dee-lite lineup. it didnt turn out as light as i had hoped for (~1900g), but thats prolly cuz i went crazy with the composites. This board is seriously RIDICULOUSLY stiff. I can jump on it and it barely flexes, and no torsional twisting to speak of. this is my freeride dh board. currently setup with jimz trucks, eventually (when i get around to ordering them) it will be setup with jimz plates + 180 hangers, and prolly some type of rounded wheel. still debating which one. details:
size: 40.5" x 10"
concave: 2" wide, 3/4" down, nice comfy concave, not super aggressive, but nice and locks my feet in perfectly.
construction (from top to bottom):
undirectional CF - 6oz 090 glass - 17oz +-45 glass -2 ply 2mm bamboo - 1 ply maple - 2 ply 2mm bamboo - 17oz +-45 glass - undirectional CF - 6oz 090 glass
I basically made an all wooden speedboard then chopped out the middle part and replaced it w/ 3/8" divinycell core, then glassed/cf-ed the #### out of it.
now, pics!
the mold:
the board:
the board w/ a hole!
fixed up the bottom layer. I ran 6oz glass over and under the foam from both the sides and the top to kind of hammock it in, i figured for extra insurance against a foot giong through the deck
out of the bag!
did the top, trimmed it up, and took it for a lil test ride!
the bottom, the white stuff on the edges is where the epoxy bled over and the peel ply left it textured
the top, gripped
the bottom, polished up, w/the flag of my hometown, geneva switzerland!
another shot
concave shot
ooh, sexy
in the spirit of full discolsure, some parts of the sides arent the prettiest, but thats cause i abide by the philosophy that i wanna leave as much composite on as possible.
been riding this around, and i love it. board is as stiff as, well, a board. no flex whatsoever in any direction. feels so light on the push off, nice and nimble. truly a fun board, and truly a basic design i look forward to refining further
Re: Build Off Contest Entry Thread 2008 Open Theme
This board is 2 pieces of 1/4 inch baltic birch laminated using the toothless method. It is 41 inches long and 8 1/2 wide. It has a half inch of camber and is flexy. the graphic is a combination of wood burning and acrylic paint finished with polyurethane clear coat. It has a red oak and maple inlay on the top and custom cut grip tape. It is currently set up with 180mm randals flush mounted and gravity street g wheels
Re: Build Off Contest Entry Thread 2008 Open Theme
Here is our 3rd board. It is 3 ply 1/4" maple. 41.5" long, 8.5" wide with concave. It has a 32.5" WB. The art was done with masking tape and stains by my wife, and i did the inlay with mahogany, sand and copper. It has a polyurathane finish on it and clear grip tape. 180mm Randal R-II's, Kryptonic Route 70's.

The only competition in this game of life is yourself. And once in a while, someone touches your imagination and sparks a dream.
So what does that create, a solid board, with enough flex to get you over rough surfaces with out killing you.
42.5" long
9.5" wide
31.5" wheel base.
Flat cave, which is 3/4 inch deep.
Set up on 180mm randal's, lime bigz.
Photo's.......
Here is the carbon and kevlar, this was me deciding how it was going to be layed.
Here is the wood in the press, i used uni bond wood glue.
Cutting the fom and putting in the wooden truck supports. 2 x 6mm plywood.
Here it is out of the press, all ready to be cut out.
Here it is cut out and ready for the drop holes to be cut out.
Ready to roll almost...
Here is my own drop through template, it take randal DH and regular randal plate's.
Graphics going down. Water slide paper.
And there it is.
Here it is all set up and being tested before it had graphics.
So my conclusion is i have a 1300g board, (2.9 pounds), solid, good looking and it wasnt to pricey. I'm happy.
Rob.
Will/boby i love your board, that is very very nice, i can see why you kept it secret, you will do well with that bag. I need to re-do my top mount so we will be pretty similar in the next build off, think yours beats mine though, the quality and shine is amazing.
Re: Build Off Contest Entry Thread 2008 Open Theme

man you got it all wrong!
it´s not about winning but about pushing your and pure imaginations limits.
these are all damn fine boards and to create something is never a thing too small not to share. maybe others will still benefit from your ideas.
it´s not about who gets a shiny feelgood star attached to his lapel but about what is being put on the table and what becomes of it.
SF has pushed me to learn and to progress. when i signed up here i knew #### about advanced composite works. i just had succesfully managed to lam some ash plys between glass and today i´m working as a composite technician in F1.
go ahead, build and post and the feedback will make you progress.

Re: Build Off Contest Entry Thread 2008 Open Theme
My board is modeled after the Hellcat by Rayne. This is the third board I have made, but the first speed board. I wanted a flexy drop thru speed board for college since there are a lot of steep hills in Houghton MI. It is a simple flat board but is wide at ten inches to give me a lot of grip.
The materials I used were;
8 plys of 1/16 inch rock maple(6 long grain and 2 cross grain)
and 30 dollars worth of Titebond III
The dimensions of the board are
Length 41"
Width 10"
Wheelbase 35"
I wanted to upload a ton of pics but the fish only lets you do like seven so I uploaded all my pics to imageshack.com and then tried to upload them with a URL to this site but I couldn't get it to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. For now I will just put the URL on this page and you can copy paste into your browser.
This board is really fun to ride and since it is a drop thru it is easy to push for long distances on. I have had it up to about 30 mph and it was as smooth as butter. I am really happy I put in the extra time a built a good board. It should get me thru college no problem.

OKAY!
Funk Bros. Longboarding Presents...
Star*Board (Drop Thru Rocker Mini!)
This board is a present for my son's 3rd birthday! The only thing he requested was green wheels (like daddy's gumballs). I made this a drop thru rocker to make it easier for him to push!
20" Length
6.5" Width
.5" Rocker
129mm Trackers
60mm 74a NoSkoolz (super soft for good rollin'!)
Abec 3 (yeah, that's right!) Bearings (slow is the key to less injury)
Everything was designed to help him have a great 1st longboarding/skateboarding experience!
in the press
rocker
you can see the shape and my "apprentice" "filing" away the drop thru
all taped up, 1st paint coat done and now ready for some fun!
polycrylic, logo attached, drying
applying the clear grip
clear grip on logo
backside!
close up of the star burst teeth marks. grrr.
w/ the trucks
bottom and cutouts
1st ride!
doesn't he look cool!
maybe this'll work better... heheh
there you go! hope you guys like it! (i know my son does!)
