i acctually have heard of people heating it in order to make it less thick so it can go on smoother and thinner

No, you don't heat it. It is a term, somewhat derived from the fact that the catalyst reacting with the resin creates heat.

I thin my resin (but not the hardener) by setting my measured cup of it inside a larger cup of hot tap water.
Warm does make life easier, but you don't want it hot.
