I did my first 50+ mile ride today and by the time I got back to my house I was racked with terrible muscle cramps in my legs. Any time I would begin to relax my legs they would sieze up and it was extremely painful. Does this happen simply from dehydration or could it be something else like potassium deficiency, not enough carbs etc.? Any way, if this happens what is the best thing to do to ease the pain? I know it's probably just the result of skating beyond my conditioning but if this does happen again I'd like to know what to do about it.
find a way to genetically remove lactic acids and you'll be set.
otherwise
RICE
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

don't worry, its just going past your limits. Your body is just really exausted and needs a bit of rest. You probably WILL feel the same pain (or worse) if you do it again. Is this a bad thing? I don't think so! Your body will adjust and you will become stronger if you keep doing it. Remember, no pain no gain! But, don't just keep forcing yourself to skate if you feel TOO much pain. Stop, rest, lower your pumping mileage then start to increase it slowly.
Before your next outing, properly hydrate and carb-load your body the day before. Consume adequate amounts of fluids to include electrolytes during/after the "event" and don't forget to cool down with lots of stretching after your ride. R.I.C.E. and ibuprofen for the pain. Rinse and repeat.
I've recently been doing some LDSing (although I haven't quite gone that far yet) and have had sore legs as well. Not quite to that extent, but pretty sore and I can say that a good stretch session before and after is really important. It will keep you from being sore and really minimize the chances of pulling or tearing something (trust me not fun). It sounds like you would also benefit from a good warm-down after your skates. Yea you're tired then and just wanna rest, but an easy walk up and down your street followed by some good long stretches will save you a lot of pain.
Lol Stupid movie.... But seriously, you need to lower the number of miles next time. Overdoing it and straining your body like that is actually worse for conditioning your body than a steady workout regimen. Cut that ride down to 25-30 miles and do it more often.
You will feel better and better as you slowly work up to that peak that you want to reach. There is truth to "no pain no gain" but overdoing it hurts more than helps.
im not sure if there is any real way to avoid it. make sure you stretch certain muscel groups very well before and after skating. eating certain foods to remove lactic acids should work, but even after a huge skate your bound to be in some pain. stretching was the most important thing for me, when we stop on the way and when we get back from skating long distance its good to stretch out your legs a little (... a lot actually).
On a more random note, anybody else's front leg comically larger in muscle mass than their back leg, from supporting your body and such during skating? My right thigh is visibly 3 cm bigger than my left, no joke.
