Default First longboard for commuting/crusing?

I am just getting into longboarding after getting addicted to it in Maine on vacation (I live in Massachusetts). I just need a good longboard for getting around and cruising. I live in a community with some hills some steep and some shallow and its mostly nice clean pavement. I was looking at somy gravity hyper and mini carves and someone had a hercarve on craigslist for $85 (used once). I would like to hear suggestions and would just like to say that silverfish has helped me so much. Thanks!

well first off welcome to the fish. there are like a million good starter boards out there. if you can afford them, loaded is good. but also on the cheaper side kracked skulls is also good. i think you need to give a little more onfo on you and what you want your board for like road conditions and if its hilly. because without that info its pretty impossible to narrow it down. personally i dont like gravity boards though

Look into that hypercarve. That is a steal. Great deck. Gravity is a reaaly ggod company with a diverse lineup. Sector 9 also has a very large selection. Click on one of the vendor links here on th fish for good gear.

Check out Motion, especially the Bigfish (Motion Longboards - Buy boards, decks, trucks, slide and gloves)
Siesmic has some great boards, especially the Cameron (Seismic Products: Boards). Great allround boards.

Sorry for the long reply time, just got back from Maine. I dont really live in a hilly area, but i do live near 2 hills that would be great longboarding spots.

I'm looking for a board with a smooth ride that will get me places without too much fatigue. I know a lot of this is all based on wheels and truck however and suggestions on these would be great. The stock board does come with Randall or tracker trucks.

I would like a different looking board, people around here have generic looking boards and something new would be cool.

Also, I'm about 6 feet tall and weigh 165 lbs.

Well there are really a lot of different choices out there for your specifications... In all brands. Try something around 40-45" unless you wanna try boardwalking... then go bigger. Smoother rides will depend mostly on wheels however and for a smoother ride your going to want softer wheels probably something around 78-82a... Anything over won't grip that well and anything under will be too soft. Also for a smoother ride the bigger wheel the better as long as you can avoid wheel bite but that can be done with some risers.

As many have stated before me, Sector 9 is an excellent deck for a low price (and so is Gravity). I'm in no way a veteran to the sport or anything, but have been in your position recently. I personally went with a Neversummer Eclipse because that is the brand I use for snowboarding (and if you look hard enough, most of their decks come with a 3 year warranty). NS boards however, are not very cheap [around 200-240.. more if you upgrade trucks//bearings]. For my next board I'm looking into Landyachtz; I've only heard great things about them.
