For cruzing anything works....
Find your dominant foot. To do so see what foot you lead off with when going up stairs. Put your dominant foot in back, non-dominant foot in front. Feet parallel to the trucks in between the trucks on the board, front foot slightly turned forward, rear foot slightly turned back. This is the basic longboarding stance. you can mix it up from there. I sometimes point my front foot the direction I am going.
Happy carves~

Where should your feet be placed? More toward the front, or the back? Would it be the same for just getting around and going down the occasional hill?
Whatever feels most natural for you and works. Also, don't be afraid to changes stances while riding - you don't have to stand straight as a tree the whole ride. In fact, that's pretty unstable anyway.

Wow.. I am so backwards. I do everything with my left foot normally - start up stairs, kick a ball, etc. When I started learning how to skate I immediately started learning Regular stance, regular pushing. Took me a long time to learn to push smoothly and balance on one foot. Perhaps I should have tried Goofy. I must go learn switch... now..
To the OP: I move all over the place when riding, it's fun. I mostly like to stay on the front 2/3 of the board though rather than directly in the middle.

for pumping,I would ride with the front foot almost on top of the front truck, and the back foot about 6-8 inches in front of the back truck, so I can flex the camber and pump easily . As for cruising, I switch it up, usually with my back foot on top of the back truck and front foot a few inches behind the front truck. It makes for easy transitions off curbs, etc.
Just my style, and it works for me. Depends on the board most of the time, but im going with a standard pintail here.
