I'm guessing if I ran it without the risers I'd get wheel bite?
So it's either buy the risers and hardware or a new set of wheels...

Yeah, no risers + Originals + a deck that's not cut to clear the wheels = big bite.
If you're looking to cure the bite problem without buying risers, then you'll need wheels that are about 1.5 inches smaller in diameter... I don't think that's what you wanna do.

Well, I'm probably looking way to far into the future here. I should probably get some more ride time in on my Apex 37 before I start thinking about getting a second board.
Thanks for the info though Barf...was just curious if anyone just had a couple decks that they just swapped out trucks on.
My Board:
Original Apex 37 Cruiserweight
S8 trucks
Lime Zig Zags 80a 70mm

Re: Original Set Ups
Apex 37 w/ S8 trucks, black springs.
4Prez Orangatang wheels.
QUESTION: i took my trucks apart so do a routine cleaning/greasing... and from then on, the trucks seem to loosen by themselves reaaaallyy quickly, and even seem loose when their tight. Did i screw up putting the truck back together? or does anyone else have this problem?

Here's the deal: lock nuts work because they have this cool little strip of nylon that the threads of the bolt actually dig into and mangle all up. This means that after every removal and replacement of the same nut, it becomes less locky, if you see what I mean.
If you are using lock nots for more serious things than skateboards, then it is recommended that you replace it after every removal with a new lock nut, but when using them for skateboards, you can get away with replacing them every 6 to 12 months, generally.
Unless it is bugging you, as it seems to be.
One thing you can do is you can get two regular nuts(not nylon lock nuts) and thread them up against each other on the bolt. Or you could just get a new nylon lock nut.

Also might happen because you got the kingpin all greasy. Thats what happened when that problem happens for me.

you probably got grease on the kingpin, or the lock nut, which don't need it. when i re-grease my wave cams i just lube the cams themselves, and throw a lil grease on the washers too. not too much though because it will attract too much dirt and dust. when you carve it will end up squishing excess grease out of the cams anyways.
you can try 2 things:
1) take your kingpin and locknut out, and wipe off any grease that may be on them. it's also probably safe to use some kind of solvent like wd40 to get the grease off, just make sure it's dry when you put it back in your truck.
2) put an extra nut on top of the locknut that's already there. guaranteed that thing won't loosen up then.
hope this helps..

Re: Original Set Ups
So I am exploring the longer wheelbase option on my Apex 34 and I must say that it makes the board feel VERY different. It makes the flex of the deck alot more pronounced. It also seems to mellow out the carves a bit. Thus far I like it but I won't get a good run on it until later tonight.
Also, I know that the best part of the Apex series is the lack of that massive riser, but I added a small 1/8 shock pad to the deck and it feels really nice.
Update: So I went on that late night run and all I can say is that its just a massive improvement. With the shorter wheelbase the deck always felt 1inch too short and now its feels _JUST_ right. Also the shock pads make a significant difference in how rough the ride is. After riding this wheelbase for awhile I might write a real review on the board.

Dude I just moved my S8's to the middle wheelbase on my 34, I can't wait to go hit up central park and test it on the hills!

okay, i realized what i'm doing wrong. It's like my first couple weeks of longboarding, so i thought putting grease on the kingpin would help.... for some reason. But i just took the trucks all apart, cleaned off the kingpin, put a 2nd nut onto the other locknut... and its riding perfectly now, not too loose, and not loosening on its own. Thanks so much!

I ride the Apex 34 at 5'11 and 180 pounds and love it. My roomate is taller and lankier and rides the 37. We both love our decks. It depends on what you want to do with them. What kind of setup do you want?
Edit: Btw getting rubbing alcohol on the graphic will induce great sorrow, as it melts the graphic right off.

Re: Original Set Ups
I just got a Hybrid 35 with S8s and am using the orange springs. I got the Seismic Orange Hotspots and they're pretty grippy, but I'm looking for something really grippy: uber grippy. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm about 215 lbs and sliding the back wheels out when practicing bottom turns is too easy. I need them to hold.
Other than that, the board is super surfy. I think its a great surfing simulator, especially if you've got a bank to practice on somewhere.
The park set-up on the 2nd or 3rd page is something I've gotta try next.

The grippiest wheel I've ridden yet is the Grapey Ape from Purple Skunk.. but they're crazy soft and might be too slow under a guy in your weight class. The (old & discontinued) red Monster Hawgs are crazy grippy as well, but you'll have to do some digging to find a set these days. (they are still out there, though) Chaput's Centrax are supposedly the grippiest grips that ever gripped, and they're supposed to drop soon if you can wait... but the centerset core means the hangar will have to poke a long way inside the wheel, and Original hangars have that big bump on the ends. When I tried to run Orangatangs flipped, the hangar rubbed on the inner lip of the wheel. The Centrax will likely have the same problem, so we'll probably have to sand some of the metal off of our Original hangars if we want to run those.
What I really think I'd try to buy if I were you and I didn't want to wait for Centrax or mess with sanding my hangar, is a set of HGR Specials:
