Newbie into longboarding
Hi.
I'd like to get into longboarding, commuting and cruiser wise. I watched the Loaded Dervish longboard on youtube and though that it might fit my needs? I'm also 188cm and 80kg (I'm Norwegian so I don't know how much that's in feet and lbs).
After what I've understood I would need some soft wheels (lots of debris on the roads in Norway) and a quite hard board, or?
I was thinking about using daddiesboardshop since I've heard good things about them.
Thanx

check out the "flavour of the day at legendary" thread
u will have a quality made board that consists of more than 2plys of bamboo and best of all it won't be a dervish
i kid i kid but get the legendary anyways

Re: Newbie into longboarding
Nothing wrong with a dervish dude; go for a flex 1 if you do. It cops a lot of shit, but it's still a qualitah board, and super duper ######g fun
Althernatively you could get an earthwing widerglider off stokedskateboards.com and snag yourself a bargain.
Grab yourself a set of abec 11 zig zags 80a (lime) or orange o'tangs. and you're set.
goodluck buddy

Re: Newbie into longboarding
Another bloke from Norway had got an Apex 37" from originalskateboards.com, it looked quite interesting!
A few Q...
- What impact on the ride does a 150mm trucks have vs. 250mm, and is 200mm enough for my use?
- What is longboard bearings?
- What wheels should I go for for for my use?
Here's a link btw: Apex 37 Longboard

Re: Newbie into longboarding
Dont know too much about different sized trucks, all i know is that you dont want to stray too far from you deck width when it comes to truck sizes.
Longboard bearings are metal pieces, although they can be cermaic, that sit inside your wheel and spin on your tucks' axels. The better the bearing the less friction and the longer the wheel spins for, which leads to a faster ride with less pushing. Id recommend bones reds they are a good standard bearing.
We would need to know a little more about what your interested in to help you pick out wheels. I know you said commuting and cruiser but would you want to slide at all or do some carving? Those would be major factors in wheel choice. If all you interested in is just cruising and commuting, id recommend a softer wheel to make your ride smoother like and abec 11 gumballs in 78a. They are 76mm too so that should help you roll over debris.
As for the dervish, if your heart is set on it, go for it. I wanted to get a new drop thru deck so I did a lot of research on silverfish. I thought about the dervish but after all of my reading i decided on the never summer heist. Its cheaper, more durable, and comes with a 3 year warranty. From what I was reading the heist is the knew dervish. Thats just my 2 cents.

Re: Newbie into longboarding
The loaded dervish is a very popular board, and many people have it. That said, it is a kick ass board. You're about 175 lbs, so i would get a flex 1 dervish. A good setup will be 180mm degree trucks, like paris or randal. Wheels come in durometers, 75a being very soft, and 95a being really hard. A few good wheels are big zigs or orangatangs. Bearings are basically parts that go in the wheels that make them spin. The most popular bearing is probably bone reds with bearing spacers, they just help your bearing last longer.
heres a good setup. loaded dervish, randal 180mm, lime big zigs, bone reds and bearing spacers. You can get it off daddiesboardshop.
Another awesome company is legendary. You can have a board personalized to your likes, and get a sweet stain on the bottom of you board.
As for the apex 37, it is a very fun board, but its not for everyone. I do like the deck, but the trucks are very different. The are spring trucks. I'm not a fan of these, they feel less natural. The are definitely have the best turning capabilities, but they take time to get used to.
150mm trucks turn sharper than 200mm trucks, and bigger trucks will carve better.
Hope this helps

That helped alot really! Thanx!
What do you mean by the Apex 37 feeling less natural?
Btw, what is the difference between Randal-RII 180mm and Paris 180mm trucks? And what difference does 85mm wheels have towards 76mm ones?

the apex is a much funner board in my opinion
the mahogany strings make the board feel lifelike compared to the dead flex of a dervish (with the exception of flex1)
APEX 37 WHEN SET UP WITH S6/8/10 trucks is a more surf style board
heres a video on the board

Re: Newbie into longboarding
orginals have different trucks, their springloaded so they pop back up and its insanley easy to turn, but on the opposite spectrum if you dont have good balance it is wobbley.
i like the dervish/vangaurd both great boards and ordered dervish for my first board with some 180 paris trucks, randall and paris are both great trucks... i forget the big differences but i think randall is more downhill bombing type truck and paris is more cruising/carving.
dont take my word on the trucks though..
orginals are beastly boards my bro has the apex 37 and malakai and there both like WOW the apex is a beauty and rides like butter and it can turn on a dime but it did take me an hour or so to get used to leaning a little bit and turning.
Good beginner board is whatever though just look for something that fits your style and is durable and just have fun with it.
the sector 9 sunset is also a pretty sick bamboo board that might peak your fancy its a drop though and its pretty nice paired up with some big zigs or gumballs and some bone reds.

Re: Newbie into longboarding
I think the trucks being spring loaded ruins the feel. Like snowman said, they turn incredibly easily and very far. I never need to turn to as much as it can, kinda scary lol.
As for 180 randal to 180 paris, its just different brands. Paris and randal are very very similar, and both are great trucks. I have both. 85mm vs 76mm wheels is just how big they are. 85mm wheels will roll longer, and 76mm will accelerate faster. If you're just cruising around 70-75mm is perfect. 85mm might seem slow on flats. One advantage of a bigger wheel is they will roll over rough pavement better.
Happy to help

There aren't exactly many steep corners to pass here in Gudbrandsdalen either Since the Apex 37 turns so fast, would that mean that it doesn't drift that good - or does that depend on the trucks?
Well, the asphalt is quite rough here becuase we have to spray debris on the roads all winter to keep the cars running. But I'm not a fan of going slow with a board on flats, then I'll just carry it. What to do, what to do?

Re: Newbie into longboarding
I've never tried drifting it, but i bet it could. i think the 75mm would be fine.
What are you leaning towards? Apex or Dervish?

Re: Newbie into longboarding
the big wheel will just need bigger, stronger pushes to get up to a decent speed, making it feel "slower"

Re: Newbie into longboarding
wheel sizes do make a difference, but the difference is minimal and barley noticable
best bet is just go with lime zig zags
