Old Dawg seeks New Tricks...
I'm just making it back into riding after 35 years and picked up a trio of longboards from Sector 9...
an ULUWATU, LUKE NOSEWALKER, and a newly acquired BERT SCRIBBLE model. I'm a big guy at 6 ft. and 260 lbs. and so far I'm having a blast with the first two boards, and looking forward to checking out the new one tomorrow. Any words of wisdom from some of you other old dogs over 40 that have gotten back into skating again for a 50 yr. old newbie?

Re: Old Dawg seeks New Tricks...
cool that you got a few different boards to have fun on.
after not skating for 15-17 yrs and starting again,i would say dont over estimate your abilities.
take it slow at first before you try hitting 50mph
wear your safety gear...getting hurt sucks and really does take longer to heal when you are 40-50 then when your 20.
watching videos on techniques and info on the fish can be useful.
have as much pie as you feel necessary

Personal responsibility for one's choices is dead and buried, even in something as simple as a plank with four wheels.
pete..Having a board doesn't make you a longboarder-riding it does.

Re: Old Dawg seeks New Tricks...
Good show! If you're anything like my neighbor, you'll fall into it like you never quit. Other than building up to longer sessions and letting all the muscles get back up to speed. Just started myself but I'd never ridden a board before.
First thing I'd say is to get your foot braking down before getting up to a speed you won't be able to run out if you bail. Since starting the end of April I've ran out 3 wobble bails, landed on my butt once and was tossed off the front as I discovered the awesome stopping power of wheel bite. No damage yet but I've got pads/helmet ready for the next phase. Lots of qualified and willing advice and videos around here. Great bunch of folks.

Re: Old Dawg seeks New Tricks...
Thanks for the feedback guys...already ran out a couple of high speed wobblies, which is tough after 3 knee surgeries...getting the helmet/pad gig together now. I agree, just don't quite recover as quick as I used to, but I'm having a blast with the local guys and I think they've been a bit stunned to see the old guy carving it up with them, and of course they all have to try out LUKE the blue monster...ride safe my friends

Re: Old Dawg seeks New Tricks...
I started skating a few years ago.
If you haven't already learned, safety/Coleman slides are fun to do and can save your hide.
You can read my article here:

If you're diggin the luke then check out the longboardlarry komodo, longboardlarry old school dancer, loaded dancer, roggs dancer, and legendary platypus. <--those are all nice big boards.
The luke nosewalker, landyachtz b-ride, and most other big boards on the market had no thought or care put into their design, they're simply big boards made so that the company could produce a big board, and have a more "complete" lineup. Try a nice one and you'll fall in love.

Dont forget the Flexdex 60'.
Had one for a few months now and i love it with a passion.
Personally i like the feel of it better than the loaded dancer and lbl [the two big 50"+ boards that i have also tried]

Yeah, will do, the FD Fat Daddy is looking good, just not sure about the flex vs. my weight ratio...took the new Sec9 Bert Scribble out for a cruise down my street this afternoon when UPS dropped it off, nice board with smooth turn radius and faaast!...the pintail will definitely take some getting used to though...kinda partial to the old school shaped decks so far, but like I said, just starting to get back into it...

I guarantee that you will be my young friend...and as you can see, we have quite a few of us old school guys from the '70s that are still fanatics about boarding here on this forum...some have skated the whole 30+ years, some like myself have kept in touch with it, but just haven't been able to get back out there until recently...and man it's a blast all over again, just like the first time!
Just be sure to wear a helmet and pads and never be afraid to push the envelope every now and then...you never feel more alive than when you step all the way up to edge and have a little peek over to the other side...take care and ride safe.

Wow. Same dude. Just fifteen and I'm just hoping I can keep on the board that long.

Re: Old Dawg seeks New Tricks...
I'm a new, old guy seriously considering ordering a longboard for the first time. I'm from the flatlands of SC but find myself temporarily in upstate NY and the HILLS!
Looking for guidance re what board to start with. Just want to cruise & minimize damage to myself.

Re: Old Dawg seeks New Tricks...
I would say get an all around good board like a Loaded Dervish, Original Apex 37, Legendary Demon, Roggs Rum Runner.
these boards do not excel at any one thing, but they can bomb hills, carve well, slide.
Once you've figured out what you like to do, get a specialized board.
My first board (like many others) was the Loaded Dervish (flex 1) no regrets whatasoever.
my 2 cents

Welcome back. One of the wondrous tuning elements available is bushings. As a larger guy, you will want to play in the higher (harder) duros. With the recent release of Venoms and Reflex to the general public, there are plenty of options. You'll be amazed at what changes you can develop by playing around with oyour bushings.
Skate 'em if you got 'em,

Thanks bro, glad to be back...I will definitely scope out the new bushings available...I can already tell it will take some tweaking to get the right turn ratio without wheel bite or high speed wobble at the same time...ride safe...

Thanks...I know it's a big ol' slab of laminate, but it is definitely a blast to carve down a nice wide hill with...and plenty of room to move around on...I'm loving it all the way around.
