Default How much of a workout is LDP?

I'm interested in LDP and I've seen a lot of people tote it as a awesome workout, but I'm pretty skeptical. While pumping does seem to work my legs, I can't say it really gets my heart rate up, which is key in cardiovascular exercise.

Has anyone lost weight doing LDP?

try doing a 30-mile LDP, and tell me your heart rate can't get up again.

Pumping is a great workout. It's like tai chi on steroids. If you're pumping for speed your whole body will be working. Your heart will be pumping, too. And, yes, you will lose weight, that is if you burn more calories than you consume.
Check out the usual resources for more information, www.pavedwave.org and Galac Land Surfing Home. Also check out Galac's newest site GTCPLDP - John Galac's - Glide Turn Carve Pump Longboarding Skateboarding.
Just curious, do you have a dedicated LDP setup? It does make a difference.

Try pumping faster and holding that speed longer. Then try pumping up slight inclines. Or just enjoy the ride

It's like most things.. you get out of it, what you put into it. I can pump for miles and barely be winded, or I can run 40 cones and be out of breath.

i use a heart monitor for some of my LDP rides, and it's very easy to get into the 150-160 bpm range. also, try to generate your energy from your core instead of your legs. my core and lats get way more of a workout than my legs.

Thanks for the tips, and no, I don't have a dedicated pumping setup yet, I'm still trying to get pumping basics down before I sink money into it. I really want a pulse but I want to make sure pumping is something I really enjoy.

Pumping has helped me with stamina and I have abs of steel haha. If you do it enough and push yourself more and more everyday you'll notice the difference.

Pumping is something any skater can enjoy.

An LDP deck is a really nice choice for a deck.

The only investment you will really need to decide if LDP is your thing is a Bennet front truck set up with wedges & bushings in the usual pavedwave recommended way.

    $30 odd should do it.

Any top mount deck with a 20''+ wheelbase
Any old truck on the back dewedged to be almost 'dead' (preferably narrow like the Bennett or just turn your wheels inner edge out)

IMO any other kind of set up (with the exception of a true slalom board) will never really let you experience the essence of pumping.

Try it out and get that Pulse on order, you won't look back.

Typical workout for me is 5 miles in 30 minutes on a flat track. I am sweating and sore by the time I am done. Abs, back, quads, and calves get the majority of the workout. But the cardio is there. I have dropped from 250 to 210 and kept it off for 2 years. I initially dropped 50 in a little over 6 months. But that comes with eating right as well. Search for BFFM if you want a great reference book on how and when your body drops fat.

LDP is great exercise definitely! what I do is I get some music that really throws you into a groove. I've found that music that has a nice ebb and flow of intensity and speed really help make the workout better. For example, listening to a somewhat slow but groovy song can help you warm up and your pumps probably won't be too intense if your pumps follow the music. Conversely, if you have a song that starts off slow or is in general really intense and pumps you up, you'll probably find yourself in an all out LDP sprint. This idea of alternating rest and high intensity periods is not uncommon in working out, its called interval training, and its probably one of the most widely used methods to improve cardiovascular strength and depending on intensity, it can be a very useful fat loss method. So in short if you want to workout by doing LDP, do what anyone said above. however more specifically, if you want to improve cardiovascular strength go for a more high intensity LDP workout, for fat loss, you want to do low to moderate intensity (enough to get your hear rate up to an ideal bpm which is different for everyone) and sustain that for a long duration of time.

I could be mistaken, but I swore I saw an interview on the Loaded site a while back about a guy that lost like 75lbs or something by pumping his dervish during his lunch breaks at work.

    EDIT:

That statement cannot be more true, I've tried pumping on so many different decks with mild success if I tried HARD, I knew my technique wasn't the greatest but it was possible to do. However, having made myself a dedicated LDP with ideal specs and dedicated trucks/bushings (I run bennett 4.3s with a skandal 35* rear, front wedged and back de-wedged) I must say my LDP groove shot through the roof, much more efficient and my feet will never touch the ground unless I'm forced to, and that my friend, is a great feeling to have.

    EDIT 2:

Absolutely.. Nothing is going to compare to a slalom board or an LDP..
People who have ridden neither talk about how great this or that pumps great, but then put
them on a board desigmed and made to pump with the right trucks, wedging/dewedging etc..
And they can't believe it when they ride it. The difference is major..

I usually wake up around 7 and if the ocean is flat (like it is all summer) I take my longboard out. The board I have is a sector nine, pintail shape kinda deal with charger trucks on it, I haven't done anything to it yet for LDP. 30 minutes of LDP and my heart is racing and I am sweating balls, doesn't help it's already around 84ish in the morning. I like to keep a really fast pace, Daytona is really flat so it's good for that. Just listen to some music, I find it to really pump me up. I had a nice session yesterday skating to DK In God We Trust/ Plastic Surgery Disasters. Nothing like some good punk to keep the blood flowing.
