I've never heard of a "commuter board" before. I'd assume that its just a normal longboard which means that you can do, well, anything with it.

Welcome to the fish!
What is your setup? deck/trucks/wheels
most setups are good for a variety of riding styles, though they may excel at a specific discipline.

Re: i'm new and i'm looking for tips n stuff
I am guessing it is shortboard length ...approx 30-33"?
Sounds like a general pourpose street deck...might make a decent slider.

just go shred. when your wheels fall apart get something from abec11 (or retro) or orangatang.

Re: i'm new and i'm looking for tips n stuff
Yeah dude, you have a good setup there. Shouldn't need a new board unless you want one. I'd ride that one until you get a feel of what you really want in a board.
Ride that one until you feel you out grew it, which you haven't other wise you'd know a commuter board is any board you find comfortable cruising around town. I'll skate on anything. I've cruised in public on a spray painted plank of cedar with 9" trucks before.
Some tips:
- The higher board, the harder to push and the more unstable.
- The lower board, the easier to push and the more stable.
- Bushings really affect the way your board feels. Harder bushings means the less turning ability/agility, the softer bushings means the more turning ability/agility.
- You can lower squeaking/clicking noses (normal sounds) by inspecting your trucks, adding wax or soap inside your pivot cups and on your bushing seats.
- Don't ride through water or sand unless you plan on cleaning and re-lubing your bearings when you get home.
- You can use Brakes Parts Cleaner to clean your bearings, but if you do, careful about the bearings cooling down and building up condensation causing rust.
- If you want to slide, learn tricks, go fast, or whatever, remember that Rome wasn't built in a day. Take your time practicing; no need to get all frustrated when you can't pull a stunt off.
- Don't cause hassles with security guards or cops. Even though the kick you out of places, they are doing their jobs and we aren't suppose to be there in the first place. Fighting just wakes it worst for everyone.
- Just because someone else skates too, doesn't mean they want to skate with you. You can ask, but don't be surprised they don't. I skate with everyone, but I've met people who didn't give a damn that I skated too.
- If you paint something green, it will go faster.
- If you can make it, don't buy it.
- Gorilla glue sucks for skating related uses.
To be continued...
