New Cruisers

Me and my buddies just came across the "mini" style of longboarding, well, we just came across the fun and excitement of longboarding all together, and I was wondering if you guys had any tips for newbies.

We've all decided on getting cruisers, I went with the Sector 9 Quad 30, mainly because of the look and deck shape.

We were all experienced skateboarders back in the day and are really just looking for a good transportation system, and some extreme carving action.

I haven't gotten my board yet, so I've been using my brother's Ripstik, with surprising success, I think that it's carving ability is beyond that of a longboard or mini, does anynoe have any experience or thoughts on the Ripstik? Keep in mind I understand it's reputation.

You obviously have never tried a slalom board or properly set carver... Poor Ripstick doesn't stand a chance... On a SL you can pump circles around kids on Ripstick. When you start going uphill (without pushing), they'll drop their jaws.
Mind you, that Quad you ordered, can be converted into a very nice slalom setup! Redrill the rear truck undrer the kick, dewedge the hell out the rear and some wedge in front, put the right bushings on - hold your hat!

Yeah, i mean i dont really know, i'm not much of a longboarder yet, but i do like the ability to slow down on longboards. Stuff can get pretty scary with two little scooter wheels on pivots and no brakes.

Gravity Larry Bertlemann. Best carvy cruiser on the market IMO.

You were saying I could set this board up slalom style? Could someone give me a link to the wheels or whatever i'd need? Or something to help me better grasp the concept?

Some Khiro soft angled risers(wedge front/dewedge rear). Soft/hard bushings in the front and back respectively. Bones bushings are great for the Gullwings. Less than $20 upgrade and your board will before like a slalom. The idea is to make the front turny, while restricting the back.Considering the short wheelbase on your board, big wheels aren't worth the investment. Check out Sk8kings.com and look at their completes for an optimal setup.

BTW, just loosening the front and tightening the rear will give you the slalom feel. The mods mentioned above will enhance it.

seriously? like how much of a feel? pumping ect?

You'll pump well on almost any trucks set up like this. The narrower, the better. Fury 5.0 are some of the best trucks I've ever pumped. If you've got a set of 129mm skateboard trucks kicking around, try em.

Well I just came across this thread again and I thought I'd pick it back up. Once I got that quad 30 I was hooked and have been skating since. I upgraded to a globe board but have recently gone back and sanded all the paint off my quad 30 and refinished it. I will post specs later as I do not currently know them. I live in Austin, Texas and was wondering if anyone was from around here and if they had any good spots to share. Thanks

Ripstik? a Ripstik? Really? I used them when I was younger when I had no clue what longboarding was. But when I got my Original Pintail 46', I loved it! And yes I am reccomending an Original. They have greeaattt turning radius!

Yes the ripstik haha, I found it quite fun to bomb hills on. Anyway, here are the pics of my board. The only specs I know are they are slant trucks, abec 7 bearings, and the sector 9 quad 30 deck.Attachment 73297Attachment 73296

Hows that awful build quality and overpriced-y-ness hype train working out for you?

I still have no idea of how to pump on a longboard...then again my trucks are fairly wide, so that could be the first issue. Either that or I'm just an idiot.
