    Goal

finally got out this morning (2:30 AM) decided I didn't want to sleep so I'd do some sprints and mess around a bit dust off the cob webs. Mind you I'm in northern Illinois, and it was about 17 degrees but luckily the roads were plowed well enough to ride. My house is at the top of two hills, each one going to a separate end of town so I started off westwards, towards the high school. A few quick kicks and I'm at a fair pace, bobbing and weaving down the deserted street. I get to the school which is usually where I go about, only to find there is a shitload of gravel all over due to the ice last week. Slightly discouraged, I walked back up to the top of the hill; center of town. I figured since I was out I might as well check out the other side of town, so off I go down the adjacent hill. This hill is of a greater grade than the previous, with a nice speed up at the bottom to finish off. After getting about half-way down I see the newly finished driveway of the fire station, which has a super smooth bank to it so I carve right on into it enjoying the hell out of myself. After returning to the main road, I give a final heave ho then tuck for the last bit. yes it was a good good ride. Sadly it decided to snow today. No riding in the near future for me.

Well that's my rant for the night

Today i saw the roads where cleared enough to ride. The thawing and freezing has really messed up the roads and when i was picking up speed on one of these messed up hills i caught my front of my board in a giant crack sending me flying into a snow bank..... brrrr besides that it is always fun.

12 miles today, including a few down at the beach in sunny Santa Barbara. Lots of goofy side pumping down at the beach, so much easier with the wind at your back

Ran some errands on the way, only bummer was the skate shop still does not have the Khiro bushing kit I've been wanting. All in all, a great day off work.

well, didn't skate, but I did fall flat on my face
I was waiting for my friend to go back to our dorm
and was making fun of him, so he kicked his shoe at me
and i decided I would grab it and run away. As I turned,
my very low grip skate shoes slipped on some sand and I
fell right on my stomach/face/knees/elbow in front of, I don't
know, say, 40 people? Yea, it was funny. I laughed, but now I
can barely walk cuz my knee hurts so bad, and my elbow is all
swollen, and ice didn't work on either... not the highest point in my
    life right now...

Went cruising and carving around on my pintail today after school cuz last night I went out and practicing a lot of switch pushing and cross stepping, so I just went out to chill out a bit and I found a nice road bike in someone's garbage and walked it home, cleaned er up a bit and pumped up the tires and went on a 45 minute bike ride!

Well I just cruised, tried to improve my atrocious cross stepping, bombed the hill in my neighborhood once or twice, carved a bit, tightened my trucks, and now I'm off to go camping (1-3 inches of rain predicted up here for up massholes, ugh!)

MJSWIDER - You live in Santa Barbara you lucky dog! I was there last October,
what a beautifull place!. I had my Loaded Pintail with me and skated down by the
Pier and then by the skatepark (it was PACKED with popsicle riders) no room
for me to carve around. Then I skated up twords town and came across your
skateshop. I really liked it (the shops ihere in St.Louis dont have longboard stuff.) The
owner of the shop (I think his name was Dan) was really cool, we chated for
about a half hour and he let me ride some of the Demo's. Then I walked up to
check out the Courthouse (beautifull) had some dinner at a Diner and then skated back down to the Pier. What a day! What a place! I am possibly coming back in either May
or next September. Now THAT was a great Daily Ride!

Yeah, not many days go by that I don't pinch myself. Especially when I return from out of town.

I love to ride from the skate park down to the bath house. It's a nice, relatively quite section of path that is great to pump, especially with the pin.

He's a nice guy, but don't try to buy anything he does not carry. I've been trying to get a skate tool from him for over two months. I could go online and buy, but I would like to support my LSS some too . . .

Coming for work perhaps, I do work at a large defense contractor in town that folks from St. Louis have been know to frequent.

On my cruise though my nice little hood I saw a plexi old school deck, old bahne, 2x4 board, loaded fish, old gravity HC, and a crazy water ski board, all being rode with stoke. I love the variety here and I swear it is increasing.

The sun smiled with me, the coastal wind whipped my shirt and I just pushed, snaking cars and bikes, baby strollers and dogs. Ducking dog leashes and chains, hopping cracks and crushing rocks. Just cruising one push after another one turn linking into another.

Yea it was a good cruise...
The sage, Longboard Buddha once said, "A tree spends 100% of its lifetime in a static environment and only after its reincarnation as a deck is it allowed to move at fast speeds...
when allowed, the wood will give thankless service if
    allowed to flow."

MJSWIDER - Thanks for the reply, I would have skated on up to the courthouse, but
the skateshop owner said that I should be careful, because I could have a problem
with the law, however, on my way back down to the pier since it was downhill and
getting dark I decided to skate it (with no problems!).

On coming back to CA, its not for business but just to hang out in such a great place
to skate, and I have couple friends in Manhattan Beach.

BTW - we have a lot in common both 45, both christians (it sounds like by your posts) and we both have Loaded Pintails with Paris 150 and Zigs!.

I am curious, since you live in Santa Barbara, have you ever been to the Powell Peralta factory, or met George Powell or possibly Stacy Peralta. I think Tom Sims (70's longboarder) lived there also?

Yes to all the above. Also changing over from a kracked skulls M1 to a Vanguard shortly. my 17 year old is getting the 70mm flashbacks and bearings off the soon to be vanny, so I have to buy new wheels and bearings. for it. More than likely lime big zigs, but I have not pulled the trigger yet.

Not yet. I work maybe 1/4 mi from the factory. I've only been into longboarding as an since November last year. they have had a couple of weekend open houses in that time, but I've not been able to get there. I am always looking for the sign advertising th enext open house as I ride to and from work each day. On my bike, that is. I've thought about riding my board all the way to work and home, but I already take an hour out of the day to ride my bike. Riding my board would be more like 2 hours a day, need to spend time with my wife and kids also, while the still pay attention to me

BTW, next time your out look me up and maybe we can get together and ride, old guys rule you know

OK Hot Wheels, I see you are in the official Vanguard Setup Database also, so we REALLY have lots in common. I'll be riding randall 180s also on a flex 2 .

So which is your go to board, the pin or the vanny? I'm guessing it will still be the pin for me, but I can't wait to check it out.

Back to the main topic, today's ride was super. Another beach run, probably 4 miles, with 3 miles of it pumping goofy. I'm trying to learn to ride comfortably either regular or goofy, and pump both ways also. I'm a natural regular, and learning to pump goofy is a bit of a challange. It was working today

I'm sure I'll take a step or two back before more big steps forward, but I do enjoy the rush of learning a new physical ability. 8)

Oh, then there was the early morning session, caught 4 or 5 waist to chest high rides, no one else out, gorgeous day to spring forward. But maybe this is the wrong longboarding forum for that session

MSJWIDER - Well, my go to board depends on what I am doing, when I came to
California I brought my Pintail, as I thought it would be easier to take on the plane, and
I had no problems, I just carried it on and put it in the overhead compartment upside
down. The Pin is great for pumping and STEEP CARVING especially on concrete.

For most of my riding I hit the Vanguard flex 4, it is a CARVING MACHINE, so much fun
to ride, I keep the trucks really loose. I bought it from Pablo at Loaded (I think you
mentioned him also) he helped me pick each component of the board, trucks and
wheels. He was a big help. I went to the Loaded office and met him and the crew
on Wilshire when I was out there also!

I rode a parking garage for the first time
last weekend, and it was fantastic, used the Vanguard.

and yes, if/when I come back out I will try to hook up! Thanks for the offer.

    Ok.
So I went out today for the first time this season.
Roads are still covered in ice/snow/slush, but there's two roads I found that weren't, so I went and just rode around there for about 45 minutes.. Nothing exciting, first time out all season though.. Beats nothing, I guess.
I need a new idea for a sig.
