What is your reason for riding whichever hybrid you ride? What advantages or aspect of you boards ride do you prefer over a longboard or conventional skateboard? I think longboards and skateboard are sick but I prefer snowboarding. Thats why I ride a freebord in the off season instead of a longboard. I've tried it though it is fun and I ride with a lot of longboarders but it's not for me. Im just curious what your reasons are.
I ride a longboard, because I'm a skater... no offense but freeboarding just seems like cheating to me.
I'm sorry you think that? Can you explain what you mean by cheating? Do you mean the fact that you can slow down and stop? To me that just seems to make good sense instead of having no brakes. Have you ever ridden one? They allow you so much ride-able terrain. Check it out in depth before you really judge it.
Freeboards aren't as easy as they look. I can snowboard and longboard fine, but cannot freeboard for ####. Freeboards seem fun, but once you can switch slide on a longboard I don't see much of a point.
I freebord to quash bad habits from other board sports!
I mountainboard because although the technique is different, it's the closest to snowboarding due to riding the same terrain etc.
I longboard because it's fun!
Longboarding is my latest sport so I don't see freebording or mountainboarding as "hybrids" of longboarding, I see them as cross-training for snowboarding.
Longboarding I see as something completely different from these. I know most longboarders think freebording is harder, but I find it easier; skating is most definitely the hardest board sport I've tried, but also the most fun after snowboarding even tough it's the farthest removed from it.

I see what your saying but what about the ability to jump? It adds an aspect to the ride that allows you access to so much more terrain. We ride a bunch of hills on campus with longboarders and yes they can go down some curbs but not up any. There is a ton of spots where they have to stop and walk up the curb while we just jump it while going 15+ mph and just keep going. Also slide on the longboard is sick but I have never seen anyone in real life who can truly stand up slide the board sideways. Plus it's take so much effort to slide and the slide and not as nearly in control from what Ive seen. I am not trying to put down longboarding bc i think it's awesome but I want to be factual here. Also the ability to stop quickly lets you ride so many more hills. We ride with a lot of longboarders at school and there are some really fun hills none of them can do because the run off isn't long enough, we just stop. We can stop, slide with control, jump, hit ramps, and do a lot more tricks then most longboards. That is the point imo.

Freebords are better on some things yes. But longboards are better at others, all your points are correct but... How many freeborders can push on the flat well? I tried for a while and gave up, despite not being too shoddy on 6 wheels. Yes, some guys can push just as fast, but some longboarders can pull out a full on sideways slide, these are both minorities. Even those guys that can beat a longboarder at a push race will lose over any distance. In my experience, there is alot less terrain (in my city anyway) to have fun on a freebord than there is for 4 wheels.
Morale of the story: Do both!! All experience is good experience!

so you'd take up freeboarding because you don't want to practice? It took me one month to teach myself to learn to stand-up slide, and I can "truly stand up slide the board sideways." commit

Not everyone learns at the same speed. And a freebord slide will always be more controlled than longboard slide. There's no need for pre-winding, counter-rotating, changing your stance etc. The board does what you want, whenever you want it. Can you do stand up overslides? Can you do stand-up spins on banks, manny pads etc.? There is plenty of things that a freebord can do that no one can do on a longboard. It's not cheating, it's not trying to emulate longboarding.
Funny that this thread started out as a simple question ("why do ride the hybrid[s] you ride" just as a refresher) and ended up becoming yet another "freeboard vs. longboard" argument/discussion. I don't own anything but a longboard and have owned nothing but skateboards. Mostly because I don't have the money to buy hybrids since most tend to be more expensive than a longboard. But I think hybrids are tight as hell and if I could afford it, I think I'd buy just about anything and everything from a freeboard to a dirtsurfer to a mountain board to a snowskate. They are all different, cool, fun and have their own merits.

No I took up freebording because I love to snowboard. This way I can cross train for snowboarding. I like the feeling of having no limits on the board and the ability to more laterally over the pavement with complete control. I enjoy the ability to stop on a dime and ride hills that do not have long run offs. I ride a freebord so I can also do tricks and have the ability to jump while riding. Longboarding is mad cool too, definitely faster and better for transportation. To be it's just a little too restricting in what you can do for me. To each his own though. I ride with the longboard club on campus and it's fun to all ride together
i freebord and longboard. i love both. since the ride is so different, you look at all the hills completely differently. the only thing wrong with freebords is pushing on flats. if only they made a freebord that could retract the caster wheels on command, so you could push better.
