Re: Streetboard Halfpipe- World Championships 2009
Not hating or anything, but personally when i see stuff like streetboards (which are just skateboards strapped to your feet) I feel like the riders are sort of offending the sport of skateboarding. I mean it takes year and years of practice to do tricks like that on a skateboard but on streetboard it takes maybe a couple of weeks on a snowboard (atleast for me). Skaters practice so much to make sure that the board doesnt fly away but strapping it to your feet just seems like cutting corners. I give props to the riders for doing all those great tricks on the streetboard but i wonder if they would even be able to ride a normal skate board and be able to air.(some which im sure they can)
Not really making an argument or anything, just ranting i guess. lol

It's a funny thing; where do you draw the line? I mean, it certainly seems like cheating to use bindings like that. But I'm sure those guys are having fun, which is cool. And if they start developing tougher tricks, tricks that could never be done on a traditional skateboard, then what's wrong with that?
I mean, were the Z-Boys cheating when they upgraded to urethane wheels instead of clay? Was the first guy to move from looseball bearings to precisions cheating? Are modern vert skaters cheating by using twintip popsicle decks instead of fat, heavy, flatnose decks? Are speedboarders cheating by using foamcore carbonfiber decks and cnc'd reverse kingpin trucks?
And yet, I have to admit, despite my logic telling me that innovation is natural, and anything fun is good... that my first reaction is still that those things look like cheating to me. I can't say why they cross the line, I'm not even sure where the line is, but...
.
Why are you reading my sig? It's boring.

It feels like cheating because they aren't doing anything new or different. It's just a watered down mix of snowboarding and street/vert style skating. If they had some thing that made it original it would seem less like cheating.

Re: Streetboard Halfpipe- World Championships 2009
Strapping your feet onto the board seems silly to me, but who cares - just keep it out of x-games and dew tour for goodness sake.

So some snowboarders got bored one summer and strapped a deck to their feet. Who cares? It's not skateboarding... it's not cheating... it's just streetboarding

Re: Streetboard Halfpipe- World Championships 2009
Ya... double backs are pretty dumb.. so are front-lip pretzel outs and such N' such.
So much for
Freebord, Carveboard, Tierny Board, Flowlab or Mountain Board, etc... Think outside the box.
The official rule now is that tricks can only be done on a board without straps.. sorry mountain, wake, and snowboarders.. ONLY skate versions!
Serious guys.. I Streetboard, and I'd love to go out with any of you guys, on my one board, and ride any terrain... Bowls - the bigger the better, Street - I luvs me some rails, and Downhill - okay so I have only done 35mph.. that was 10 years ago on a plastic snakeboard.
It is all about the shred.. you either do it or you don't.
Streetboarding since 95' ... so how long is that 1.., 2.........

I've been doing it since 1996. If you hate on this sport, then you have to hate on snowboarding or any other sport where the rider is attached to the board. And that's just completely absurd. And NO, these riders did NOT learn these tricks over night or in a week or even in months. You may think it's easier being attached. But you're wrong. Whenever I ride a skateboard, I think. Ahh, this is easy! I can just jump off, if I am about to eat it. Even something as basic as a nose manual. On a skateboard, if you press down too hard and your nose touches. What happens? Your board stops and you jump off. Not so on a snakeboard. Your nose touches and you eat it. Snakeboading, like many things, don't judge it until you actually try it.

A handplant just isn't as badass when the board is attached to your feet.

I'm all for these guys ripping and doing whatever they want to do, but I think that all of these skateboard offshoots actually regress the board sport because these 'innovations' take away from the possibilities of the board and rider, not add to them.

Re: Streetboard Halfpipe- World Championships 2009
Well, a skateboarder being able to simply put one foot on the board and push off the ground with the other foot, in order to get rolling...just isn't as badass as a snakeboarder
having to understand and utilize the mechanics of non-holonomic locomotion in order to get moving. See, arguements can be made both ways for so many aspects. Some offshoots may take away certain possibilities, while adding new ones. So again, it goes both ways.
Remember, your board sport is an offshoot too. Surfers could argue that skateboarding is easier, because the surface underneath you is solid and not constantly moving, like water is. But I don't think skateboarding has regressed itself or surfing in any way.

The topic of the thread is streetboard but you keep saying snakeboard.. is there a difference?
What can people do on this board, that can't be done on a skateboard?
Trust me, I know where skating came from, I'm not assuming god shat out a skateboard on the 8th day and everything was awesome. I don't think your surfing-skating comparison is fair because they don't even occupy the same space. You can't say today I'm going to take my skateboard on the waves.
I'm not saying that people can't ride these things and do cool **** and have a blast, but I am saying that as far as I can tell you can still do all of those things and more on a skateboard and it is still the king of the street-bound board world.

Double backflip
The trick at the very end...Backflip to 50-50 onto a movable round rail that was placed onto the downside of the pyramid. Yes, he landed it on his fourth try. I was there, as we were one of the sponsors =o)

Re: Streetboard Halfpipe- World Championships 2009
Ahh, the name. It's like Rollerblade/Inline or Mountainboard/All-Terrain board. The original company was called Snakeboard. It was patented and registered trademarks. So a few years ago, a couple companies began manufacturing and decided to call it streetboard, so as not to infringe on the trademarked name. However, to be technically correct, the proper name is pivotboard. Since a streetboard is the overall category for any board ridden on the street. I'm sure you have probably heard skateboards and longboards referred to as streetboards. The word has been around for ages. So, as many people tend to refer to a product by the original brand name(rollerblade, mountain boards, hoover, kleenex..the list goes on), I tend to use the word Snakeboard, as it is been around for 22 years now and most widely known by that name.
