I see that mountainboarding has some appreciation here, but not too much activity...I figure I'll ask with what few mountainboarders may be here. Anyway...
My bro just got a mountainboard, and has caught my interest. We have some nice hills hidden by trees across the street from my house with varying slopage from what I would ride to what maybe a seasoned rider could handle as it can get rather steep. He bought one of those "Yak Research" boards that has a nice beefy deck. First one came DOA as it was delaming so I don't want to chance that when I buy one...I'm considering shelling out some extra cash for something that's a known brand.
Seeing that MBS seems to be the leading company for mountainboards, I was looking at the Core 95 as it holds 200lbs. I weigh 190. I was also eyeballing an Atom 95x, but that only holds 180 so I'm 10 lbs too heavy for it, I guess. Anyone had experience with either of these boards? Would my body weight being 10 lbs over be able to ride an Atom 95x, or am I better off with the Core 95? I'm not looking into spending 500 bucks for one as I'm only a newb, and probably am not going to get that serious into it, just doing it for the fun of it in our hills. Thanks!

This board is the equivalent of my first board, the Jeep Rennegade. It's a good way to get the feel of mountainboarding without spending an arm and a leg. The deck is solid, made of maple laminate.
I outgrew my Rennegade (ATS trucks) after about 6 months. All Terrain Skate trucks aren't responsive enough for extreme street carving. I wanted something way more responsive. Decided I had to try "channel trucks" with street slicks. Channel trucks (MBS Matrix system) are way more responsive for carving but require more skill. I'm so hooked on channel trucks, I could never go back to anything else. BTW the MBS Vector system is not a true channel truck system, it uses skateboard bushings rather than a spring shock system.
What kind of riding will you be doing?
One advantage, it does look like the Atom 95 deck is pre-drilled to accomodate Matrix System channel trucks. So if you wanted something more responsive you could upgrade by replacing the ATS trucks with Matrix Channels and Tri-spoke hubs.
I would stick with MBS to start. Unless you plan to do "big air," I don't think 190 lb will make that much difference.
The Core 95 deck has more flex and 35 degree tip angles making it more responsive than the Atom 95x (maple laminate with 25 degree tips).
I pretty much only ride street on my mountainboards now. Only thing I ride off-road is the dirtsurfer FS.

Go with the Core 95. You get a composite deck and better components for $120 more than the Atom 95. It should last longer, and not need to be upgraded as quickly. I've owned Atom and Sol models from previous years.

I'd suggest the Comp 95. It's 400 bucks but well worth it....has high end trucks, which are critical for carving and off roading. AS well top notch bindings and hubs. You won't regret it. If money it a toal issue then yes the Core 95 (at 300 bucks) would be a decent board. It has Vector trucks instead of Matrix though. MBS MOUNTAINBOARDS
