By my local skatepark I saw a guy with a carve board going down a steep section of the park with one, but am not sure if it is any different from any other carveboard.

Maybe you're thinking of those mountain boards?

Mountainboarding, also known as Dirtboarding, Offroad Boarding, Grass Boarding, and All-Terrain Boarding (ATB), is a well established[1] extreme sport, derived from snowboarding. A mountainboard is made up of components including a deck, bindings to secure the rider to the deck, four wheels with pneumatic tyres, and two steering mechanisms known as trucks. Mountainboarders, also known as riders, ride specifically designed boardercross tracks, slopestyle parks, grass hills, woodlands, gravel tracks, streets, skateparks, ski resorts, BMX courses and mountain bike trails. It is this ability to ride such a variety of terrain that makes mountainboarding different from other board sports.

Look near the bottom and they've got an 'MBS Longboard' with 18" wheels for all terrain.

Yep. You're looking for a mountainboard. Powerslide to stop, or do 270 cutback. Carve to slow. However, some boards do have a brake option (more about slowing than stopping).

MBS (mbs.com) and Ground Industries are the 2 major suppliers of mountainboards in the US.

And Rogdon...guess again. This is the "HYBRID" forum.
