Which hyboard is most like snowboarding?
Which hyboard is most like snowboarding?
btw a hyboard is a word i picked up from a group of longboarders i met and hung out with.
im guessing its going to be the freebord.
reason why im asking is i dont live by snow anymore, and want to relive that feeling
Longboard or die. I've done both

Freebord sure looks the closest from the vids I've seen, although I've never gotten a chance to ride one.

I went snowboarding for the first time this year. I was lucky that my best mate was working in Switzerland for the season, and he was a champion boarder, and invited me over, and taught me and my g/f to snowboard. It is the best board sport ever. I've surfed almost everyday for the last 2 years, and snowboarding just blew that away.
I wanted a board that would be the same as snowboarding when I got back home, so I looked at all the boards that claimed to be the same as snowboarding, and settled for a freebord. The promo videos claimed it is snowboarding on the pavement. It looks EXACTLY like snowboarding. The fact that you can slide around to scrub off speed, and slide around into switch etc etc. So I ordered one whilst I was still away, and got it a few days after getting home. And............... it was one big dissapointment.
The technique for Freebording is totally and utterly different from snowboarding. The end result may look the same, but the technique on a freebord is all about twisting the board to raise and lower the outrigger wheels, rather than leaning and weighting a snowboard. I was snowboarding on black runs by the second week away, so I know what I'm talking about.
The closest I've ever come to the snowboard feeling on the street is on a speed board with a slight flex with 35 deg trucks and drifty wheels.
If you have steep hills then a flowboard or a Tierny (SP) maybe your answer, but I think you will be hard pushed to beat a well set up longboard. However, don't just take my word for it, I'll sell you my freebord if you wanna try!!!

Re: Which hyboard is most like snowboarding?
I tried freeboarding and as said i find it nothing like snowboarding, tierny board is close for carving but you cant scrub speed with it, i didnt feel safe riding a tierny board down a steep hill near my house because i couldnt slow down before the intersection at the end. Closest i've come is my dervish and my friends NS heist, with some drifty wheels they are bout as close as ive come.
Dervish Flex2 : Paris 180's, 80a Inheats (or 80a retro freerides), 90a/85a venom barrels
Custom 23" Bamboo Mini: 66mm BOCA wheels
Custom 47" Dancer: Paris 180, 80a ZigZags, 93a venom barrels
Sector 9 34" Cosmic
Sliding and Dancing makes me smile

Re: Which hyboard is most like snowboarding?
I'm told by people much better at skateboarding and snowboarding than I am that a Demonseed with 50º Randals and 76mm 81a Flywheels is almost exactly like riding a snowboard.

yeah i actually have a flowboard, and its okay. the biggest problem is the fact it has so many wheels. too heavy, impossible to find trucks, and when you go over to another wheel to turn, that wheel has to go from 0 to whatever speed you were at, making it VERY VERY inefficient
Longboard or die. I've done both

Snowboarding techniques and equipment are about as diverse as skateboarding techniques and equipment. So you first have to define what type of snowboarding you're talking about before anybody can answer your question.

Re: Which hyboard is most like snowboarding?
A tierney board with the rubber indy wheels has a really nice controlled slide feel and brings on a very zen like feeling of concentration. Best on a moderate hill. Get one of them too when the budget allows.

This is true.
However, when people refer to a snowboarding type of longboarding, I instantly think of carving. You know, the long hard carves, edge dug into the hardpack, knees taking all the jolts, then controlling the drift before slightly unweighting the board as you go flat for a split second before changing onto the opposite edge, running straight for a few moments, scrubbing of a little speed by drifting the back foot out hearing that scraping sound as the edge sends a plume of icey snow into the air, changing line slightly to avoid the skier who doesn't even know your closing at twice his speed..........................
Man I love snowboarding.
Anyhow, so yeah I guess a loose drifty board (double drop) that's wide enough for sideways foot placement, stable (double barrel bushings)for running high speed straight lines across wide four or five lane hills, with turny enough trucks (depends on speed I use 38* on one board and 57* on another) to throw some hard turns at each edge of the hill.
That's what I'd call longboarding snowboard style.

I'd have to disagree with you, the twisting you're refering to is called foot-peddling and this is done on a snowboard too. You can weight/unweight a freebord in the same way, it has less effect though due to not using snowboard boots/bindings. Freebords are very hard to learn, but once you get the hang of them they are the only board that simulates snowboard technique properly. You can slide and carve the same way a snowboard does, you might be able to carve tighter/harder on other boards but you can't do that on a snowboard! (the turning circle of freebord trucks is smaller than any snowboard). If you're serious about praticing your snowboard technique then get one, if you just want carve around and have fun then get something else... I'm a snowboard instructor, so I know what I'm talking about!

Nice first post. Glad you weren't teaching me.
Here's another of those snowboards that turns like a truck.

Love that video.
I can't figure out why almost none of the US boarders use that type of gear. Now I'm running my hands along the snow like that in 4G turns with parabolic skis pioneered by the boarders while they continue to shoot down the hill with little speed checks, 0.3G turn in floopy boots and short spinny boards. Then I ask them on the lift if they long board also and almost always the answer is no At least a bunch of them get stuck in the terrain park messing with the rails so I don't have to worry about dodging them.

I had fun just watching that, extreme carving is awesome but a niche of a niche!
Keef, I don't want to start an argument but you haven't given freebording a chance. I got mine when I was a similar level to you and despite going out nearly everday for 2 months I still couldn't really ride it. It wasn't until I came back from my first season and blew the dust off it that I started enjoying it. If you've stil got yours you should keep at it; I've seen freeborders hit blacks on their first day of snowboarding with no lessons!
Kaykar, I've never had the chance to ride a T-board, they do lok like a lot of fun, but no more so than a real carvy longboard, I'd buy one if there weren't so many other boards I wanted more!
I've only just started longboarding and already find it more fun than freebording but I wont stop freebording; it's the only hybrid that behaves like a snowboard (in more than just one aspect) and keeps my bad habits in check. All the claims that freebord make on their site are true, you just need to give it time, it's bloody hard!

Okay, that's fair comment. Maybe I'll try it again.
