I just received my Original Apex 34 today. And after riding it for about 2 hours, I have to say it is AMAZING! I own 2 other Original boards (Torpedo 40 and Derringer) and while they are great in their own right, the Apex is in a totally different class.
Here is my setup:
Apex 34 cruiserweight (I am 190#s)
Original S6 150mm trucks (black springs)
Seismic Cambria 62mm 84a wheels
Deck:
I am 6' 3" and the deck is just right for my regular stance, so I think most riders would be comfortable with it’s size. It has a touch of camber which helps the deck to snap back nicely when pumping/carving. It also has a nice amount of concave that keeps your feet locked in. Both the nose and the tail are very functional when it comes to nose/tail manuals and shuvits. The fact the board is so light (about 5lbs) makes all 3 of these tricks pretty easy. It has just the right amount of flex for me and I am right in the middle of the recommended weight for the cruiserweight.
Trucks:
Original trucks are a love/hate type of truck. I think they are great. And even though I have other Originals, these perform totally different because there are no risers. This makes the board very stable. Even though the trucks are really “turny,” the wide platform and ride height make you feel like you are in total control at all times. Pushing is also much easier because the deck is so low to the ground.
Wheels:
Even though the Cambrias are VERY grippy, I was able to do speed checks and standup 180s with ease, right out of the box. These wheels are a perfect combination with this board because you need grip to handle the sharp turns that Original trucks provide, but slide when you need them to due to the board’s low stance.
I would definitely recommend this board to anyone that is looking for a freestyle type board.
