Re: Kahuna Big Stick review
I was looking at that, it just high on the price for me right now. How fast did you think you ended up going?
Like faster then pushing?

Re: Kahuna Big Stick review
i made a makeshift big stick like thing, i attached some old skate wheels to both sides of a pvc pipe and they fit tightly and i glued them on to make sure they stay on, and i attached a bushing in the hole of one end and it works great, pvc has a nice flex and i find my homemad big stick to be slower than using my foot

Re: Kahuna Big Stick review
I just ordered one myself and it should be here Friday! I'll see if I can't get out this weekend and give it a go and report back. I also purchased a 44" Kracked Skulls Scimitar, that will hopefully arrive around the same time.
I am a rank beginner at age 44 and just took up snowboarding this season. I'd love to surf or stand-up paddle, but living in the middle of the desert has its consequences.
With the way my knees creak (less since CrossFit) and multiple broken bones, I am looking forward to some light cruising and carving; at least for the beginning!
Cheers,

Re: Kahuna Big Stick review
Thank you Lucky 13.
I do plan on stopping by the local skate shop and picking up some pads -- already ordered a helmet, so with any luck, I should be testing the waters this weekend.
What do you suggest for gloves? I know there are several styles of sliding gloves, but wondered if wearing a pair of leather work gloves would suffice in the beginning.
Cheers!

slide gloves are nice cause if u do fall it is real easy on ya. if u can make sure u fall in a pushup position then when u fall all u do is slide and possibly mess up ur shoes a bit.thats it

Yes, it is a bit costly for basically a broomstick with some rubber bumpers on the end. I was just too lazy to make one.
I think pushing is faster, but you can get some respectable speeds on the flats. There are some really good benefits to paddling, mainly it really works your core shoulders and arms.

I hope you enjoy it. I'm older than you and have had my share of gruesome injuries from multiple military and sports related causes. Skate paddling is not entirely without risk, but it shouldn't jack up your creaking knees.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention about the blisters. I recommend a good pair of leather gloves to stave off the blisters. You'll see what I mean when you start paddling. I'm using some old, worn rappelling gloves. You can buy some good gloves at: Gloves

Re: Kahuna Big Stick review
Thanks for the head's up Hilmark! I definitely want a pair of leather gloves while I am learning; not sure about sliders -- couldn't hurt, but of course couldn't wear them while paddling.
The Big Stick arrived today (hopefully my KS will be here tomorrow)! It is larger than I thought it would be, but balanced well enough -- seemed easy enough to use on the coffee table...
Thanks for posting the pics Slayer9019 -- I was dating a woman from Jersey, mmm.

Re: Kahuna Big Stick review
I have a Big Stick and love it, I race kayaks and bought a Longboard to ride during my lunch hour to get a quick workout in. Then I found the Big Stick thought this might help my paddling as well.
Is very fun (I live in Florida and not very many hills near me) I have been 20 miles on it and can get up to 14 MPH in a short sprint on the flats. Be careful not to stick the pole in front of wheels as is a instant brake.
Well made and worth every penny.

Re: Kahuna Big Stick review
If you race kayaks, you must be in really good shape, especially your upper body and core. I bought the big stick as an alternative to work out my upper body, along with my weekly upper body workout routine.
I skate alot, downhill and skatparks, so i tend to workout my lower body more than my upper body. I was wondering if you think the big stick is an intense way to sculpt your upper body? After 2 sessions of using it, feel somewhat sore, but if I use it daily, Im sure there will be positive benefits from using it.
By the way, I use my flexdex L37 drop through deck when I paddle board. Its the only board I have with soft wheels.

Re: Kahuna Big Stick review
It is a very good core workout.
You should be paddling with your waist and shoulders not your arms.
WhenI race kayaks my lags and abbs are what hurt the most.
Bracing with my legs to rotate my torso.
keep the arms straight and use your core to move the stick.

Re: Kahuna Big Stick review
The big stick. We use it for core conditioning and even a great cross trainer. You should try it with different boards. One of the boards we use is a subsonic pulse for a more versatile workout bottom, mid and upper body workout. Second a drop deck for a combintaion of SUP and the ease of pushing. It is a great way to train when you off of the water. Winter we do stand up surfing or one man canoeing. Just some info paddling comes from the core not your arms and shoulders. To be more efficient practice form and function to get the most out of your paddling. Enjoy

Re: Kahuna Big Stick review
Hi everyone.
I know this thread is a few weeks old, but I came across the Kahuna Big Stick by accident and then came here to look up reviews of it.
My primary reasoning behind getting a longboard to begin with was to spend some time outdoors and get a bit of a workout. The time I've spent with it in the few weeks since I got it in the mail has been a good workout for my legs, but I started thinking about stuff for the arms. So I started searching and came across the Big Stick. Jumped over to this site which has been super helpful already and searched. After about 3 minutes I figured I'd get one.
I ordered it the other night and it should be here early next week. I can't wait!! I think it looks great!!

Re: Kahuna Big Stick review
I have had my Big Stick for a couple of weeks now, and I really like it.
I have just the most basic model, the $89 one. I may end up ordering one of the bamboo ones for myself for Christmas, because I really like the idea of a bamboo one...that, and I'll be ordering one of KCs boards, too.
I have been having a blast with it. It's a great workout, it's fun, and it's pretty relaxing. I've been trying to go at least half a mile every night, with about two times a week going out for three mile paddles.
The first few times I got back and my elbows hurt really, really badly. I started wondering if I was gripping the bar too hard, and so I tried to loosen up a bit, and I stopped having those issues. So, if you're new to it, try to make sure that you don't have like a death grip on the Stick, or you might end up making yourself a bit sore...and also a bit more tired.
I'm really happy with this purchase, and I find myself using my board almost primarily for paddling now.
