    Default Beginner questions

Ok, before I start this is my first post, so glad to meet you all.

Anyways I skated when I was younger and was pretty bad, but had some fun. Now that I'm older me and a few buddies have gotten into long boarding.

There are some terrible hills in my town, so I need wide trucks and good bearings to pick up any decent speed.

Currently I use this board: MOOSE Longboards 9" x 40" Black COMPLETE Longboards on eBay.ca (item 360143536429 end time 11-Apr-09 17:54:32 EDT)

The trucks are different than the ones listed, but they're better so it works out, but its too slow for my hills I have to ride here. So basically, my question is, would any longboard truck work on this?

How would I know which trucks to get, which bushings to get and what bearings?

Basically any help is appreciated, I only know anything about skateboards, and almost nothing about longboards.

    Thanks

    Welcome to the fish!

What trucks are you running? How many mounting holes? 4 or 6?

Any slowness is most likely a wheel with a slower/older urethane formula, and/or dirty bearings.

Does your setup have bearing spacers and all 8 speed rings?

    Here is a good read.

First of all, trucks have nothing to do with how fast you go. Second, I have never heard of moose longboards and never seen any of the things on that board. chances are, for $30.00, you are getting crap. There are no brand names which doesn't help either. It is good to know where a product is coming from before you buy something.

As for wheels and bearings, the wheels will have a bigger impact on how fast you go. if the wheels are really soft,(low durometer) then they will be slower.

well the deck is just like a blank board with a kick tail. Not the best, but it will work for now.

So wider trucks wont make it any faster? I don't need too much carving as i wont be going tooo fasst on this board. I might upgrade this summer too, which is looking like a better possibility now.

The trucks have 6 holes, but only 4 are bolted on. I'm not sure about the wheels but I will definetely look into upgrading them, as these are impossible to slide on.

The trucks are made by a brand called Core. They look pretty good actually, better than I expected. The bearings are Abec 7's, so I have room to upgrade there too.

So if I bought a harder wheel, do I have to make sure its the right size to fit on the board, and if I got bigger wheels, would I need to get new bushings so they don't scrape the side of the board?

    Thanks al ot so far.

one of my freinds has this very board and the trucks are dirt they are like skateboard trucks.

so the board is decent i guess it will work. but i would recoment gulllwing chargers 10 inch. my freind has them and i am in love i am actually getting some. i have ridden randells trucks aALOT and i am not the biggest fan for their trucks for freeriding. so gullwing chargers.

wheels big fast wheels are orangatang in heats but there are many wheel options for what you are doing.

bearings i have powell bones and they are good and fast. not amazing though

Yah, the trucks are basically skate trucks, thats why I figured wider would be better.

So are all bearings and wheels interchangable? As in if I get a set of Ongatang wheels, they will fit on the trucks no matter what?

You know what, I might just upgrade the whole truck, wheel and bearings. I would like a better board, but it does the trick for now. I love kick tails though, as I'm used to skating and it helps me out a lot sometimes.

    Thanks for the post.

Edit: Ok, I'm definetely liking the looks of those, but with my income I'll have to slowly buy these 3 items. So what order should I get these in. Wheels, Bearings, Trucks?

I shouldn't be doing any really hard riding until maybe August, but I want to learn how to get a good slide going soon too though.

i think the important thing are the trucks just cause the ones you have are so bad! hahaha no offense. so i think the trucks should be first, then wheels, then bearings last

Ok sounds good to me. So a 10 inch truck is the way to go? I looked at the ones you suggested and I'm liking it.

I also looked at those Orangatans and am definetely getting those.

MY bearings are Abec 7's, so they arent too bad. Could be better, but theyre not the worst.

BTW what do you clean bearings with? I know not to use WD-40, but is regular penetrating oil fine?

u know what i am not the best bearing guy. i know wheels but not much about bearings. so cleaning i don't really know....

i think your bearing will prolly work just get new wheels and trucks

Not all trucks are measured in inches. Gullwings are the only company that I know of that does it. Any 180mm truck would work on that deck. As far as bearings luberacants pick up some bones speed cream or other similar specific bearing lube. When it comes to wheels and bearings, they should be able to fit any truck unless you get trucks with 10mm axles than you will need 10mm bearings. I think your best bet is to post what you are planning on buying so we can tell you if the components will work together but more than likely they will.
    Good luck.

Actually, I'm going to get the Gullwings today I think.

I'm looking at this: GULLWING CHARGER LONGBOARD TRUCKS NEW 10" WHITE BLUE on eBay.ca (item 170346708125 end time 19-Jul-09 16:42:52 EDT)

Will it fit the board and everything?

Also can I get it cheaper at any shops or nething?

Ok, I just bought some 10 inch gullwing chargers. I'm just wondering, will I need new risers or anything?

The ones I have are flat, but my buddies are on an incline, so the wheels dont hit the board. Will this be a problem?

angled risers would be a good choice.

Install them in a wedged/dewedged configuration (both narrow ends facing the front)

Ok, sounds good. I'm guessing they'll have some if I go to West 49? I don't feel like ordering these online.

Now that I think of it, there may have been a board shop open up, I'd rather go there than support a chain like W 49, but I may have no choice... There aren't enough boarders here to keep smaller stores open.
