    Default Indy DH plate

I threw an idea out in the Cindrich thread, but figured it needed its own.

How about a CNC'd Indy baseplate? For DH. Make the KP at a 90 to the plate. I'm thinking that would drop the angle down to the perpendicular equivalent of a 40 degree BP. Would be extremely simple, too. The KP being at a 90 means you really have no need for a kingpin bolt stay/mount. The bottom bushing could almost rest right on the plate or cupped washer. The only height you really may need would be for the pivot, which is around 3/8". If you used a half inch thick plate, maybe all the pivot would need is a hole. To lock in a 3/8" hex KP, all you would have to do is mill a 9/16" wide x 3/16" deep channel up to where the KP hole is.
    Just a thought.
    I'd buy them.
And then Flannelman was ambitious enough to draw something up (work in progress. )

We know they may be extremely low as of now, but my thinking is rather than making them as tall as a normal Indy BP, a person could just add riser. That way someone who wants the ride height of a lowered deck could do so on a topmount or whatever. My original thought was to keep it as simple as possible, to cut down on time, bugs, etc.

If anyone is wondering about how the angles relate or whatever:
A stock Indy kingpin is set at about 70* to the plate/board, and is roughly the perpendicular equivalent of 60*. Increasing the angle to 90* to the board (or a Randal-esque 0*) drops the angle down to 40*.

Looking for feedback, suggestions, stupid comments, etc.

Really interesting. I'd like to see how it turns out. I feel perfectly fine on regular indy's, and i'd love to see how this effects that characteristic indy "turn" that we all love so much

Yeah I know it's like walking on sacred ground (Mark Chandler swaps plates already, as many of you know ). I've been riding Indys for a long time....I guess I'm just tinkering in my mind and curious about how they will turn.
I thought about just making them myself, but I really don't have the time. Plus Dave could make them look nicer.

I would be interested in this plate if somebody made it. Ive seen pictures of CNCd indy style trucks somewhere, I have no idea where I would find the pictures, I dont think they had a lowered plate, but I was curious how they would feel, and why nobody seems to make any... probably not much of a market at all.

I've thought about it ever since I started DHing a couple of years ago. I learned on Indy 215s, but fast cornering is a little more loose (for me) on Indys than on some other trucks. I've wedged them in various forms, as well.
I've tried dewedging the hell out of them topmounted (3 wedged risers so about -21*), but at my weight I had too much leverage and it felt like crap. Dropped thru and dewedged that far would be entirely ridiculous, so here I am.
As far as the market goes.......

so.. a regular indy is about 40degree? or 90? (sorry got a little confused..)

i'm definently interested to see where this goes.. a DH specific indy-style plate/truck would be awesome!

I'm interested in both the plates and even a whole CNC'd truck. I'd love an Indy at about 200mm wide because as far as I know, Tracker's are the only ~200mm conventional truck. Combined with the baseplate, it would be a sweet setup, especially if the bushing seats were slightly wider/deeper than a conventional Indy.

I'm very interested to see how this turns out. I've been gearing up to start modding my indies. Never thought of fooling with the baseplates, I was just thinking of using sphericals.

One thing at a time . Yes, it would certainly be cool to have a slightly wider hanger as well.
My thought on the plate is, it's a fairly simple thing, and would be pretty affordable to make/buy. I'm just simply throwing an idea out there, and hoping Dave could envision it.

KP sphericals in Indys/Aces are insanely responsive, and a faily easy mod. I prefer the standard bushing seats the way Indys are now. But with a lower turning angle, who knows? Could be pretty cool.
    Sorry if I double posted.

How the 2 pivots relate angularly is different in Indys, Trackers, etc. than Randals. To put the angle of an Indy in terms of "perpendicular" (where the hanger sits at a right angle to the KP), it's 60 degrees or thereabouts.

    forget KP angle...

    go by the steering angle...
    indy is @42deg...

so what you want is like a 35deg indy baseplate? right?

    Hey Hung.
    Maybe?
Actually I was just trying to figure out what the steering angle would be with the KP at a right angle to the plate.
And....what that angle would be relative to a Randal and the like. My theory seems okay. No?

From what Im understanding, the pic and the description dont match. For a standard indy hangar to fit you'd need to raise the angle of the KP, and this would lower the steering angle (i think)

So is the idea basically a de-wedged-drop-through-compatible-old-school-drilled plate for indy hangers?

    No. It's an Indy-compatible plate. That's all.
The KP will be at 90* to the plate. Simply put. No bells and whistles.
If you have a set of Indys handy, check them out. Imagine the KP being at a 90 to the board/plate. There ya go.
    The pic is pretty accurate.

I would be very interested in these plates. I would prefer them, in the end, to have the same ride height as a regular indy. They're already very low, i'm not sure making them lower off the bat would be best. You can always add risers/un-risers for however you want to mount them.

For those confused, If you look at an indy, the KP is angled. What is being suggest here is a CNC plate where the KP has no angle, and just sticks strait up ( 90* right angle to the plate/deck). Due to the geometry of an indy, this would calculate to a ~40* Randal.

I am having dreams of these on a hellcat.....*drool*
