Independent trucks and bushing sizes

I'm planning to get some indy 169s for a future set up but was wondering which bushing sizes can fit on the stock kp?
I have venom barrels and cones, some khiro barrels, reflex barrels and tall cones etc. Mostly I have barrels. I heard the kp is shorter so I wanted to see what could fit so I could order new bushings to go with the trucks at the same time. I'm hoping it can fit a regular barrel and a small cone (like a small reflex cone)? Not sure if I'm looking to knock out the KP for a longer one at the moment..

I run a 90a Venom barrel and a bones hardcore medium top on my stock kingpin, no bottom washer. It`s a thigh fit but works great!

A small cone and barrel combo work well for the stock kp if your looking for stability. Most of the time a tall cone on indy's involves modifying the kp. Bones hardcores bushings work good for indy's with the stock kp.
Installing a longer kp lets you put bigger bushings on which in turn provide a more "cushy" carve, at least in my experience. It also will make the ride height a tad higher, not good if your trying to stay low.

Best setup for stock Indys is Bones Hardcore bushings.

Best setup for Indys in general (IMHO) is taller kingpins and taller top bushings. They will be able to lean farther and carve great. You will have kingpin clearance issues when it comes to grinding though.

Has anyone tried 2 randal top bushings. they seem a bunch shorter?

I guess i'll have to wait for mine to come in and give it a go

I played around with bushings allot before I changed the kingpins in my Indys. You can fit an Eliminator or a barrel on the bottom with a Bones one top fairly easily. You'd have to be pretty talented to get a washer in there though, it's tight!

washer top or bottom because bones don't need washers, that's what the colored ring does

my current indi setups(stock kingpins):
cruising/carving 149mm on an old gen superglider yellow randal bottom front ruby randal bottom rear medium hardcore tops no bottom washers

sliding/park 169mm on a 35.5 drifter moogs all around

i can't help but worry if the top bushing will somehow decide to pop out from under the kingpin nut when i'm carving down a hill.
so i went out to the local hardware store and bought two flat washers to replace the cup washers under the nut. it serves as support for the top bushing but does not create enough resistance to matter in comparison to no washer at all (i tried it both ways). about the only thing it does is compress the bushing like 1mm.

You don't need washers on top with Bones. In addition to providing hella rebound the plastic inserts obviate the need for that. (Is there an echo in here?)

PS - If it isn't just the blurry photo then you're top bushing looks like it is bulging too much. Use harder bushings (yellow or black) instead of cranking down your bushings too tightly. It will carve better and the bushings will last a bit longer.

Yeah, it might be just a shot of a weird angle of the truck. The kp nut is just tight enough to be level with the top of the kp. Proving there's little to no bulging and that maybe secretly i'd want my trucks to be looser still. Maybe i'll revisit the no top washer idea.

ah thanks for the replies guys with your setups and what not. i am indeed going to set it up on a carver so i will most likely end up replacing the kp sometime.

I ride my 215 with a 90a venom barrel on bottom and a stock small indy cone on top.It is very nice.

I wanted a big cup washer on the bottom, to kinda restrict a little more movement because I was getting a bit of bite, even with a green Elim. I ended up with a longer kingpin and a couple thick flat washers under the green Eliminator, and that solved it. The Bones of course, like everyone knows, don't need washers.

Bigger bushings are nice, especially soft elim and barrel / tall cone. Just for future referance on how to swap the kingpin...

1) Spray some WD-40 on the kingpin head, so that it is submerged and let it rest for a few minutes.
2) Get rid of the excess WD-40 and hit the kingpin out with a hammer. If you dont want to damage the Stock kingpin's thread use a piece of hardwood or wooden mallet etc. (a rubber mallet wont cut it)
3) Once the kingpins are out sand the area where the head sat with a rough sandpaper.
4) Rinse with metho to remove the WD-40 surficant and other crap before glueing.
5) Grab a 2.25-2.5" hex head kinpin and slot it into the hole. Mark where it exits on the other side
6) Grab some 5 minute epoxy
6)Coat the kingpin up to that line with epoxy and re-insert. It should slide in slowly, coating the splined area of the baseplate with epoxy.
7) Allow to set for 5 minutes, then add more epoxy until it is level with the baseplate.
8) Allow 24 hours to cure

(some guys heat the allu then smack the kingpin out, or use JB weld, I just find this is the easiest / hardest to screw up)
