Default Truck Failure!

I didn't search for existing threads (sorry), but I want to share with others, what I learned "The Hard Way" yesterday. Randal 35 degree base plates and RII hangers or not compatible! I broke my ankle in 2 places (tibia and fibula bones), because of this combo, and I really hope that this doesn't happen to anyone else. The hanger came out of the pivot cup, during a high pressure turn (coleman slide). When this occured the truck immediately stopped and all my weight momentum and torque caused my forward ankle to snap.

The combo works with bushings that aren't wide. (JimZ's, etc) I personally use a JimZ bottom, and green venom top with a flipped hangar and it fits together just fine. JimZ bottom AND top pulls the hangar back slightly and does not sit flush in the pivot cup however.

I got to check my set-up, Jumbo took me to the hospital and has the boards from yesterday's session, but I think I had black Randal barrels top and bottom on the truck that failed.

He said the pivot slipped out of the pivot cup... allowing the hanger to rotate free around or pull off from the baseplate. Not a good thing to happen while riding.

Bummer man, hope everything heals up not too much trouble.

Personally that has always been a huge fear of mine especially because of the lack of perfect fit regarding pivots and Randals.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Try to lengthen the pivot cup, or do something like this:

It just keeps the pivot from moving in and out of the pivot cup upon vibration. Depending on the duro of the urethane or type of material you use to make this little ring, you can really get a superior ride. I found that it makes the trucks ride exponentially smoother and the lack of rattle and useless movement gives you a much stabler feeling truck. Try it out. Good luck and a quick recovery to you.

1. find old pivot cup.
2. cut 0.125-0.25" off old pivot cup (ring part, not bottom part).
3. place ring around pivot on hanger.

OR you can shim your pivot cup a tad:

1. find old pivot cup.
2. cut off the bottom half (leaving no walls, just the triangular piece)
3. put triangular piece underneath pivot cup in baseplate. if this is too thick and the pivot cup sticks out too far, cut some more material off the triangular piece.

It might work for some of you, but from my experience, this does not work. It still leaves a shallow amount of pivot in the cup and it will still pop out (luckily I was doing what I do best, safety sliding )

Shimming works. At least I personally haven't had one pop out this way.

Ouch!!!

Yeah a Paris hanger is a much better fit for the 35 degree Randal baseplate, no chance of it popping out like that.

There is a 35 degree R-II plate coming though.

btw, this could be a new RII vs old RII problem...

guys have been running RII hangers in 35 plates for a long time with no problems..

i have a feeling the new RII hangers have shorter pivot tip to bushing center distance...

someone with both the old and new RII hangers can do some comparison...

It might work for some of you, but from my experience, this does not work
agree, these pivot modifying tips sound wack...

The newer ones are indeed shorter.

Get some old hangers for the 35° baseplate.
When you buy them, check if the pivot is nicely round and not shifted, to see if the casting mold was aligned.
I only use the old ones, because of that longer pivot reason and furthermore because you can replace the axle.

Get well soon ! (broke my ankle 3 weeks ago, but not because of the trucks, my fault)

Thanks for all the info guys. I just wanted to shed some light on this issue and get knowledgable feedback from the experienced SF community. I'm having surgery at the end of next week, then its just a matter of healing. I've got a friend who is buying two decks off me to cover my emergency room visit. I'm trying to off-set the cost of this injury with some of my extra DH and skating gear.

i'm rather glad i never had this happen to me, i ran a 50/35 truck combo for a long, long time but recently switched over to 50/42 for various reasons, one being to have a more natural fit into the pivot. however, i ran my 35* plate with jimz bottom shapes and stim shapes and, yes the hangar pivot did stick out a bit, but never had enough give to be able to work its way out. TIP: just make sure the diameter of the top bushing (when unflipped) and the diameter of the bottom bushing (when flipped) are suitable to fit in the bushing seat properly without having to adjust the way the hangar fits in the pivot.

this means: it may not be a good idea to run jimz top shapes (when unflipped) and jimz bottom shapes (when flipped)
jimz bottoms feel like dookie anyway when run on the recessed "180" side of the hangar imo
when in doubt...81a flashbacks
