my trackers feel pretty close but i dont have a caliper or anything to check
Trackers are close to Crails.

Definitely stronger? More precise, not sure.

Less chatter in slides, more predictable transition between roll and slide, less of a chance of bending, extend the life of your bearings.

I dont think thats the case anymore with stage IX and X
yup....I had some stage VII or VIII with the stock axle so loose that I could move the axel in the hanger just by over tightening the axel nut on one side. Eventually I tapped out the stock 5/16" axles with a 2lbs hammer and a drift and hammered in a pair of 8mm SS axles a machinist friend made for me. Stage IX and X are cast in place axles not press in like the earlier stages

i noticed on the crail axles, the outside bearing sits mostly on threads, and the threaded part is undersized...
I assume you're talking about their downhill trucks.
Like too much thread? And by undersized, I assume you mean less than 5/16?
Both axle ends? Those axles are pressed in, and maybe yours were pressed in slightly off center(?) I've worked on/messed with at least 10 sets of Crail DH trucks and never seen that.
Iv never even thought of this... i figured 8mm was 8mm, iv got stage 10 215 indys now and a set of 10mm bears coming in and a set of gullwings that are going on a shortboard as a shlong cruiser which i dont care about. guess my next trucks may be paris or crails

wait, 10mm bearings on indy axles? is that what you are saying?

So when you actually get an 8mm axle do you need new nuts?

that depends on what you have the axle threaded to...mine were threaded to 5/16" but in the words of my machinist it was a b1tch to cut. I also have to use a couple of washers between the nut and the bearing because I have enough axle to space out the hanger to 194mm if need be

i will check it again,
i don't own crails, i was checking them out on a friend's setup and noticed this...

meaning that they don't fit biltins right, which is really fvcking annoying.

last batch we got from them is way thicker, and the axle is closer to 8mm.
guess which one is newer.
This thread is new info to me, but it makes a lot of sense. There's a noticeable amount of play between my axle and bearings, but I figured it'd be fine as long as i had my spacers and speedrings.
Any reason why a really small shim wouldn't work to tighten things up? Or maybe something as simple as a strip of tape on the axle?
This may take a lot more work than I speculate, but could you hammer out a non precise axle and replace it with precision axles for cnc'd trucks? (Just thinking out loud)

Until someone takes a caliper to all of those trucks any speculation is mostly useless. The amount of play you have doesn't just depend on the axles, also the bearings. Not all bearings are a true 8mm, either.
I have a caliper, it measures to a thousandth of a mm. AJ, do you have all those trucks you listed? Cause I sure don't... Let's meet up and I'll measure all the axles. Maybe we can measure bearings as well? And maybe some precision trucks while we're at it.
