modded dh hangers

My friend got randal dh's, but only wanted the baseplates, so i bought the hangers off of him and decided to have some fun modding them.

I just hammered out the old axle (was really easy actually), went to mcmaster, ordered a 12" long 5/16" diameter rod (i'm too lazy to worry about press fitting my bearings in or whatnot, and/or facing hangers....precision be damned!), drove over and picked it up. Stopped by home depot and got some loctite. And voila!

Fat ass new hangers. The width can be varied from 160mm to 200+, and i can even bump doublewide gumballs on this! All that's left now is to get a thread cutting tool from my dad's work and put some threads on this. Imma test it on my 50 deg baseplates, and if it's actually not craptacular, prolly buy some UB baseplates from asphaultplayground or something. I'm stoked!

and yeah, i know it's prolly not a good idea to have such long ass rods sticking out of the hangers, theyre gonna get bent, i shoulda done 10mm stepped down to 8 and faced the hangers and all that. but the tools I have access to consist of a vice, a hammer, and a drill press (which I use to lathe radikals), and this is purely for kicks. Prolly gonna go down to home depot and get a fat ass stack of washers to extend the "hanger"

i'll get some photos of them set up when I put some threads on the axles tomorrow. Prolly for kicks for the first run I try on em imma try doublewide pink gummies on front and back...hehehe

Prolly am gonna get some gos and run 2x in front and just 1 pink gummy in back. I'm just so stoked that these trucks have so many options.

Are you going to ride the doubles free? like not joined? cause I think that doing so causes ugly wheelbite, you need to join the two wheels. I'm all for experimenting tho!

you dont have to necessarily join the two wheels. what you can do is add a custom spacer between the two wheels. but for this to work, you also have to have a lip on the inside of the hanger for the inside wheel to butt up agains. if that makes sense.

IMO it will better work if the 2 wheels aren't sticked together. While turning, it's allow the outer wheel to turn faster... ???

The loctite may not stand up to the torque of thread cutting if they are glued in place now. Maybe I've misunderstood. If you hold the free axle in bench vice and cut the threads, you will end up with a knurl from the vice jaws which may help lock it in place. Just don't clamp axle on bearing areas.

Like the above poster said, it would have been wise to thread them before gluing them into the hangers.

Sure, they'll get bent quickly, but who cares? It's a 30 min job to replace Randal axles, so enjoy them while it lasts.
