    Default grade 8 bolts

went to home depot to buy grade 8 bolts to replace my kingpin. they didnt have them. sent me to ace. bought them from ace. wasnt sure about the size so i grabbed a kingpin that i had on my desk. bought 2" grade 8 3/8 bolts. got home, took my randal trucks apart and learned that randals take a longer kingpin. (im guessing 2.5"). ####. i felt stupid. but i did get new hardware to mount my trucks with. (at least i didnt #### that one up to. :P)

for randals go with a 2.75" kingping if you're replacing it (stock is 2.5")

Yeah 2.75 is the perfect length for Randals.

if they are randal DH I believe they prefer 3" ones but 2.75" work nicely for RIIs

Stock Randal R-II kingpins are close to 2-5/8, but 2-3/4" allow for a wider range of bushing choices. For the DH model, 3" are the preferred length.

It depends. Some folks have broken multiple ones, others haven't. The quick fix is to flip them around so that the kingpin's head is inside the baseplate.

i run 3" grade 8 bolts in my RIIs and they work fine... the 3" range lets me double up bushings, and make hourglasses out of 2 conical bushings. very nice additon and cheap too.

so you put two conical bushings on top of the hanger and two on the bottom?

Shouldn't you get fine thread instead of the coarse thread? I bought two grade 8s from Home Deport the other day but the stock NyLocks don't fit - it's the correct size (3/8") but I bought coarse thread instead of fine thread. For now I'm still using the stock grade 5s on my RII 180s (kingpin flipped). At some point I'll buy some new NyLocks or maybe some locking washers and whatever nut I can find. I don't think Home Depot specified between the fine and coarse thread, if I remember correctly.

It should have said. I just restocked on Grade-8 kingpins yesterday and I bought them at Home Depot. All they had were coarse thread and it specified on the bag that I purchased them in. I got some 3" ones because they didnt have any 2.75" ones. Perfect size for my Randal DHs, and I havent put them in the RIIs yet.

you wanna look for fine/machine thread. i think there is a differance, but when i got mine from home depot (grade 5) the said they were machine thread and they worked fine...
not sure if its all home depots, but here in az they dont carry much anything in grade8 fine thread. the guy at home depot sent me to lowes, and they had what i needed. but their nylock nuts were like 2.5 times as tall as the stock ones...

only differance i could think that i would make would be that you would have less prescision when tightening/loosening your trucks. but i done know if the differance would even be noticible.

harware in bulk? how many kingpins are you going through...?!

    I <3 the search feature.

Anybody have any problems running the course threads vs the fine threads? I just got a bunch of course threaded grade 8 and matching tall locknuts.
