The DH trucks are on the backburner right now. I have a lot of new ideas for DH and general purpose Longboarding, but I'm still trying to distill them into simpler and more elegant solutions (meaning fewer parts, ease of use, etc).
The Fyre Truck is a slalom and pumping specific truck where I don't have to ever worry about grinding. As long as there is adequate wheel clearances (and there are), the kingpins can remain exposed. On Downhill and Longboard trucks however, there will plenty of ditches, parks, pools, pipes, and street like obstacles to contend with. I will want to have "carve friendly" versions with taller kingpins, larger bushings, and wider hangers, but I will also want "grind friendly" versions where there is nothing to prevent with the hanger from grinding nicely over coping, curbs, and corners. This will most likely come about by selling Hangers, Baseplates, and Bushing/Kingpin Kits separately. Three hanger widths, three baseplate angles and two or three bushing setups would yield 18 to 27 unique combinations.
There are a handful of decent trucks for that now, but the art and science of learning to turn is an area that slalom skateboarders do best. I think that it's easier to beef up a slalom truck concept to arrive at a DH truck than it is to get a DH truck to work for slalom. You'll see smoke (and mirrors) now, Fyre soon, and Liquid later. And when you put the two together - Liquid Fyre!

Hey My x-ray vision program ' sees ' a flat spot on the kingpin that cooperates with the cross pin and prevents it from turning. Cool !!
Cigar ??

You lie! You lie! You don't have x-ray vision! You just happened to notice that the crosspin isn't aligned with the center of the kingpin and deduced that there's a flatspot on the side of the lower portion. But nonetheless, CIGAR!
BTW, the kinpin has another special feature (Mr. X-Ray vision), what is it?

Nice cigar !! I'm going for another one
That other feature: The kingpin is larger on the bottom with a shoulder for the bottom cup washer [ Which you didn't bother to show ] so that it retains the assembly and provides resistance when adjusting the compression on the bushings. The phantom bushings shown seem to be in a non-compressed state or there would be some space above the baseplate.
That should be worth a coulp'la more cigars !!

Re: Chaput Truck Alert
Man, unbelieveable, that's all I've got to say. Chris!! Please:
A) Make some with wider axles
B) put the ultimate carving liquids on fastforward
C) Send me a huge chunk of the slalom scene here to texas so I can do it against more than just the clock.
Mr. Chaput, you are my hero. Actually. I own 5 longboards and 5 of them have your wheels on them. Bearings too. Come out with slalom and carving trucks, and I'm sure that the boards will ensue. If not, at least bushings. Nothing turns me on more than pink and lime green urethane in high 70 and low 80a durometers..

Well, maybe those of us on Chaput's "clueless wackos" list would. How'd it go again? Arab, Wax, Biker, Farid, and Slim?
But as usual, nice product development Chris! Your talent in that regard, and in slalom/downhill skating, is indisputable. I'm sure a lot of skaters are going to be stoked on your trucks. Congrats.

Re: Chaput Truck Alert
I read every post in this thread.
I was very curious and anxious to see those trucks and now they are here with lots of pics and details of them described by Chaput himself...
I'm really happy to know we are going to have a high end and functional slalom truck.
Chris, congratulations on coming up with that wonderful truck. You are a rider, a great one, who carries the skate stoke in your soul... Once again, congrats Chris and I allways want to see you messing around and developing functional sk8 products for our boards!!!
Imagine the day we got a Fyre truck here in Brazil... Man, I'd be the most happy rider around !!!
It's really hard to get slalom stuffs here. I hope that can be changed quickly!!
PROUD WEFUNK AND PAVEL RIDER
It's what we all REALLY come to races for... Talking about it afterwards!

Cigar? A box of Cubans is on its way.

For those without x-ray vision, what Wiki is saying is the we've been seeing the one on the left (without compression), but that when you tighten up the locknut enough to compress the bushings, you'll see the bottom cup washer raise itself slightly above the baseplate (like the picture on the right). We're already use to seeing more threads at the top.
This does of course mean that the bottom cup washer has to be strong enough to handle the pressure. Not unlike the top cup washer that has only the bottom of the locknut to support it, the bottom cup washer now has only the shoulder of the kingpin to support it. So, it's beefy cup washers for those who want to compress the hell out of "too soft" of a bushing, rather than just use a firmer set of bushings. I made it easy to take the truck apart so that most people will just use an appropriate bushing. Notice also how easy it is to drop a washer or two onto the shoulder to shim up shorter bushings. In any event, the resulting compression will be unform on the top and bottom of the hanger's bushing seat when the bushings are of the same shape and hardness. You can do anything that you want, but it make sense to put like bushings top and bottom (conical, barrel, hourglass, spherical, etc)
When I want to do a complete hanger swap, I only remove the two pivot nuts and everything slides right off. When I want to change a bottom bushing, I remember to first loosen the kingpin nut, because if I remove the hanger first, the kingpin will spin in my hand when I try to loosen the locknut. I think that making things this simple will encourage people to experiment with different bushings and different baseplate angles. I encourage everyone to NOT use wedge pads and to instead just get the baseplate that you you really want. I think that you'll be able to get one set of hangers, three sets of baseplates and some different decks and put together an impressive, yet inexpensive quiver.

Re: Chaput Truck Alert
Unbelieveable. That's all I can say now. And also, for the first time ever, Chris came out front and actually showed us what we wanted to see. None of the crap we dealt with wating for ZigZags and Reflex Gummies. I think he got enough complaints about people getting pre-debut stress syndrome.. I'm fascinated by this truck and cant wait to get one. Any chance that this would work with some axles up to 140 or 150mm?

Re: Chaput Truck Alert
wow, more and more info and these trucks just seem more amazing. well, since no one has really asked yet what do you think the final price will end up being, after the first runs, the production runs. you said cheaper than splits right, but is that just for a single hanger and plate? whatever in still gonna buy them

You owe a compliment to whatever or whoever affected your memory! What did we hear about ZigZags before they came out? Was there really a lot of anticipation, but no information? See what you can suss out. Unlike these trucks, which are protos we can't buy, the ZigZags were under the radar before being released at a La Costa Boys/Silverfish slalom clinic & race in January 2006, the photos, designs and diagrams were posted, for the first time anywhere, on the front page of the 'fish the night before the cliinic, and the wheels were in shops like Mile High Skates within 2 days of the first time you could have heard of them. Pre-debut stress syndrome might have been a few hours... The "hype" in that monster thread was all AFTER skaters were riding wheels that were readily available. Check it and see.
It's cool to see the diagrams and descriptions online so early, that's for sure! Unfortunately, we're not going to see Fyres in MHS on Monday...or next month... etc. Wouldn't that be great, though! In the meantime, I have pre-debut impatience syndrome...

Re: Chaput Truck Alert
Well, if I remember correctly the info trickled in slowly, starting with a thread by silversurfer about a letter from chris chaput. 5 pages letter was the debut. I guess youre right though.. I'm just so excited I dont know what to do.. Maybe get more people in the area into longboarding, particularly slalom!
And I think the greatest asset of all is that chris raises the bar for the price point so much that we will see a much better and more competetive skate market in the next few years! Great for us broke-@ss longboarders!

Nuh-uh. That's why I was saying... go look when that thread that SilverSurfer started actually starts. Then go to the front page, open the Product Releases and scroll down to the release... the ZigZags were raced at Pumpstation by people that bought them retail, the next day. 5 pages later...30 pages later... ho ho!!
I agree with you that it's an exciting time. Chaput's shoulder dislocations and surgery may turn out to be a windfall for skateboarding. Trucks, wheels, bearings, bushings... word is, the workbenches at ChaputLabs have been as busy as a one-armed guy could make them. Let's start a thread about the five colors of Liquid Bushings (don't!) or "reflex crowns in labyrinth Biltins". Send an anonymous case of RedBull to the lab and just sit back...

Re: Chaput Truck Alert
Broken- There are guys riding slalom in Austin and San Antonio.
Does that help you any? Gorrilla Biscuits is riding slalom in Dallas.
I can't see these coming in alot cheaper than a Split.
The baseplate will be a fairly expensive baseplate with the two pivot pins mounted well and structurally strong.
I hope the price is where Chris is aiming but I'm not holding my breath.
Looks to be the best though.....really hard to do and make it simple.
Nice going Chris.

Re: Chaput Truck Alert
Fort Worth, not so much.. But I'm trying to get down to Austin more and more these days. I was out of town last Texas Outlaw meet. I dont do slalom these days because I have nobody to run it with and am busy enough taming the hills around here. We shall see. And Erik-I think you got me there. But still. I wonder what all colors the new Abec11 bushings will be? Reflex thane? Super Orange 89a-yes please.
