No Worries I wasn't Accusing you of flaming or bashing peoples set ups at all I was just commenting on how I got on while Riding DH on Indys and share the relevant wise words I was told by one of the greatest Downhiller's of yesteryear..
Man Gary Hardwick was ####### rad!!
SUBJECT TANGENT!!! Can anyone post a link to the footage of his 50ft jumps on a speed board off an intersection that used to be on the TVS site? That #### was gnar!!!!
Re: *NEW* Official Guide To Riding Indys For Downhill
Informative thread. I dig on the specifics that have been successfull (for some) in competition.
Notice the Ace plate in some of the wedge pictures (no mention).
It seems to me that the Indy/conventional truck would be great for a rear on a speed board with the Randall type on the front. Wouldn't this offer the most stability on front AND rear as far as caster is concerned?
The bearing spacers for wedging looks sketchy though.

Yeah, I'd like to get that footage to. I used to have it saved before my computer crashed. That jump was so nuts that it didn't look real at first.

215's may have been designed for downhill.... Back in 1977!!!!
Indy's didn't come out til 1978. and 215's (the big ten inch) didn't come out til 1984.

Indys are the raddest trucks ever!!
Indys WERE rad. Depending on whom you ask, they haven't had a decent truck since Stage 1998 (some would say 1991 or even 1986). Indys today are built around what street skaters want.
1. lightweight design
2. short kingpin (that is hard to replace)
3. new school hole pattern
Don't misunderstand me, I mostly ride Indys, but I prefer the older ones (stage 7 and prior).
My ideal indy:
meaty hanger like a stage 5
Stage 7 (6 hole) baseplate (but correctly drilled)
straight, non-slip precision axles that don't bend (or at least are replaceable)
inverted kingpin
good bushings
Re: *NEW* Official Guide To Riding Indys For Downhill
I feel that if your going to ride a set of indys, you cant have slide pucks or grab rail. Especially on a madrid. MErcado (upsetter) is a gnarbar ripper, So are the others he mentioned and filled in on thier setups stand EVERYTHING. MAd STyle.

GOOD points.
Indys are for grinding.
I have the 139s for banked slalom / "death races".
The kingpins could be a little longer.
Re: *NEW* Official Guide To Riding Indys For Downhill
Too bad Randal, Crail, (insert truck manufacturer) can't make trucks as low as Indy's. Kahalani are low as Indy's, but I don't want to cough up $400+ dollars for them. If I could get a low Kahalani truck for the price of a RII-180.....
Re: *NEW* Official Guide To Riding Indys For Downhill
I agree. I want to see a cast truck that isn't mega-high. I like to be the one that's high, not my board.
Kahalani's have proven that the pivot-to-kingpin dimension of Randal-style trucks (Randal, Holey, Crail, JimZ, Radikal, Bear Grizzly, etc.) can be lowered quite a bit and turning/leverage doesn't suffer.

So this is where I respond to a few coments.

You can only (de)wedge a truck so far...
Randals are now super accessible, good quality, super tunable and affordable. Why not? Kahalani's are a bit more pricey but also sit at the same height as Indy's and offer just as much lean, if not more.
The MAIN reason I ride indys is I like how they turn. They turn like nothing else. The funny part about this is I have tried other trucks. I actualy started riding Downhill on Downhill Randals.... Then switched to Jim z's. In That time I was not comfortable. I couldnt put my thumb on it. Just the turning didnt feel right. I relized I didnt like the turning of a randal style truck and that I was used to how my Indys turned on all of my other boards. So I set some up and that was it for me, I finaly felt comfortable. I got that same feeling I got on my downhill board as I did when I was riding a pool or setting up for a rail. For me its a Comfort Issue..........And im a professional Badass.
So with that being said I have every reason in the world to run them at super high speeds and I do offten. Ive taken them to 60+ on a regular basis and anyone who has riden with me knows I handle em'. Why ride a pony when you can ride a bull!!!!!
Someone asked about Trackers for Downhill? In 2004 I rode trackers at the Indian School Race they felt ok. I could see them being set up for DH if one liked how they turn. But if some one sets em up for DH let us know! Dont be bashful and experiment people. Think out of the box. Dont be afriad to put a wrench in your hand make things work!!! Thats how muscle car's and nascar were born!!!!!!
