10mm axles - just hype or do they make a difference?
I'm considering testing out some Bear Trucks - the 57 degree turning angle sounds very interesting.
If I'm running 77mm wheels (I've never done any that big before) would the 10mm axles be good to have or can I stick with traditional 8mm ones?
I know that they "claim" the 10mm are to reduce the chance for bigger wheels bending the axle. However, considering that the ONLY trucks I can find with 10mm axles are Bear Trucks, I get the feeling that the use of 10mm axles is a lot more about marketing hype than necessity.

10MM will feel a bit different at speed and make your setup heavier.

I'm not sure how a different axle size will feel different "at speed". Also, the weight gain is extremely minimal.

The major thing that turns me off about 10mm axles is that then you have to buy 10mm bearings.

yeah, 10mm bearings are near impossible to find at local shops, and from most online stores the only ones available are the landyachtz bearings. Its not probable that your 8mm axles will bend even with a slightly larger wheel, but many people have good experiences with the 10mm, so i have nothing bad to say about them (except the bearings)

I own both & don't notice a difference except a little weight.
I bought the 10mm one's when I was running a 90mm fly wheel.then switched to the 8mm.
I think the 10mm are a little overkill.
bearings are not an issue if you know where to get them.Any good Industrail bearing supplier, like Kaman bearing,Applied Ind Tech,Motion Ind.
The above is just my opinion.

Re: 10mm axles - just hype or do they make a difference?
I think the general rule is if you stay under 80mm wheels the 8mm axles should be fine. I am sure some aggressive skaters (e.g. 40mph colemans) could bend anything, though.

yeah it sucks that only landyachtz and garver are the only ones who really make 10 mm bearings

size doesn't matter, it's how hard it is. I own a few 10mm and lotsa 8mm.. They, as Mark surmised are good if the raw stock is has the qualities needed. They are both insufficient, if made from poor stock.

Ferrari and gabriel please QUIT SPREADING misinformation!
10mm 6900 series bearings (10x22x6) are an industrial commodity just like 8mm 608 series bearings (8x22x7). They are readily available with all the usual options like shields, double labyrinth seals, ceramic balls etc.. that 608's have.

*Every* bike shop on the planet has them and you can also always get them online at big distributors like VXB.

Properly heat treated 8mm axles can be just as strong if not better than 10mm axles that dont go through proper treatments, from what I've been told.
I find 10mm trucks to personally be a pain in the ass...I like my bones reds.

Re: 10mm axles - just hype or do they make a difference?
it depends on quality of axle material, the 8mm axle inside a magun or a crail even will be denser than the one in the bears (grizzlies). the grizzlies have a low quality 10mm axle, they suck basically. the smokies have a high quality 10mm axle, thats stepped down from larger stock....
and sorry rbriggs i dunno about you but i felt no difference riding 10mm axles at speed

They aren't "skate" bearings, they are bearings. And now you know.

Re: 10mm axles - just hype or do they make a difference?
No kidding, im just saying theres less selection of 10mm bearings, and its not worth limiting yourself like that just for the added comfort knowing they are less likely to bend (which isn't too common of a thing with 8mm axles)
