Yo.
Being a car nut, "traction" to me means gripping the road to provide acceleration, whether it be braking or propelling the vehicle forward, and "grip" refers to the force a tire can provide to turn.
Here in the longboarding world, the two terms seem to mean the same thing, how well a wheel can grab the road. Is my assumption correct? It's been bugging me forever.
Well, cars and longboards are inherently different in that cars are propelled by drive systems that directly move the wheels. Thus traction is necessary. A longboard is set in motion by a pushing foot or gravity, neither of which require the wheel to stick in a forward/backward manner.
So basically it boils down to wheels gripping the road. I do believe in longboarding the terms are interchangeable, but grip is more widely used.
also, grip isn't needed to accelerate/brake, that's done by our lovely feet.
the only grip we discuss is in turns, that's where it does make a difference, i think.
(o, yeah, i do have heard people talking about more grippier wheels being less fast, but i don't believe that... it might be true a bit, but the difference should be negligible<-- or some word that looks like that)
