i have been riding for years, just recently discovering the technical aspect so i got some khiro bearing spacers, and holy cow! what a change in feeling.
i thought i was starting to get good at stand up slides, but now after installing these, my wheels contact the ground MUCH better than before. apparently my wheels were chattering over the ground before of something, even though it felt smooth. i'll have to work on the slides all over again lol
but it really makes it a way more solid feel when riding. carving is so clean and predictable. I highly suggest getting a pair.

Oh I agree they really do change the ride. Its not like they are expensive either. Absolutely worth the money.
Wow so bearing spacers do that much(non sarcasm). That's amazing. I've never ridden without them. I'm gonna recommend those much much more now (to other people)

now try some Biltin bearings. They encorporate the bearing spacer and both speed rings into the design of the bearing. 2 peices instead of 5 for each wheel. They REALLY make the difference in smooth slides IMO

i need to replace my bearings anyway, and i have been looking at those as an option. i had no clue they combined everything into so few parts.

ok, i know you have age and life experience on me and everything, but i'm gonna have to say it shouldn't make much difference. ever stood on a soda can without crushing it? its the same force in the same direction that we are looking at here.
those little spacers are much thicker, and smaller. it should be a real bitch to get them, even aluminum ones, to deform unless you put a side load on them which they arent meant to take. like placing them on the ground and stepping on the longer side. maybe if the nut loosens and the wheel can rattle a little will it get deformed. thats the only way i see it happening.
my dad has brought home hair-thin pieces of what is essentially copper pipe, from his place of work building sattelites, that can support insane amounts of weight in the same way we are talking about. but crush flat if you place them on the ground the other way and put even a little weight on them.
i dont wanna start a flame war or anything, but i just dont believe it should make a difference with the weights we are using in longboarding.

From this description I'm still not sure what exactly the bearing spacers do... Do they make sure your bearings stay aligned with the wheel? I've been riding without spacers for, well ever since I started and there doesn't seem to be a problem.
When I was younger, spacers where too much hassle, so I just stopped using them, then the other day I threw some in, plus speed rings, and the difference is definitely worth it! It just feels so much better, smoother, slides less chattery. Good times

You can tighten the axle nut completely with spacers, and the bearings wont "pinch" (its pinched when you tighten it too much without spacers and it wont spin freely). This means the wheel is held in place a lot better, as there is less free play.
They are not 100% necessary at all, but the ride is quiter and smoother imo, and slides are a lot less chattery.
Add to this speed rings(thin washers), and you have a much smoother ride!
Also, for those of you confused, the setup goes;
//////###########///////// axle - speed ring - bearing - spacer - bearing - speed ring - nut
______/____\_____
spacer make a world of difference, smoother, quieter, everything is just overall tighter and more precise. everything feels like its working like it should. and for like $2 or whatever it is for a set(free with wheels at MHS) definitely worth it. i wont ride without them.
someone else said it before, Mark I think, a board is not a complete if it doesn't have spacers

I will see to it that I get some.
I'm sure you can get these at any local hardware store right? Does anyone know the exact measurements for them?
i dont think you can get spacers at a hardware store, the average spacer is 8mm x 10mm(.400")(8mm for the size of axel and 10mm for the width of the spacer)
id just go to like longboardskater.com and buy some, they have them for i believe $3.95 for a set with free shipping

i only have one set of spacer and they're in my race wheels, but in all honesty i never noticed a difference between sliding with spacers and without. Plus you can only get spacers online and im not down for payin like 3 buck plus shippin for something that would only be like a buck at a hardware store.

but biltins arent perfect... Id rather have a good set of spacers that I can use with my normal bearings than a set of biltins. I notice there is a gap between the biltins in most cores that wouldnt be there with good spacers.
