Thats what we typically use on our lathe, but urathane is too soft, and it has a tendancy to grab the tip, and occasionally break of the end, and launch it at dangerous speeds. It also likes to grab and jam.
This really limits the ammount of material you can take off in a pass.
With The motor... We'll I'll just have to get one and see.
But, when you're using it as a drill, typically you tighten stuff down to the point where it actually is going to stop the motor ( especially if you're tightening bolts. )
As far as relying too much on the outer race gripping the core...
This is basicly what we do with our lathe. Exept we use custom made aluminum peices instead of bearings.

You'll also see, that we do run it pretty slow.
I do agree on the carriage bolt thing, something pointier :P
alot of ghetto-ness going on in that vid, but you need to start somewhere, never seen so much manual milling equipment in one place
but that last part when the vice and hammer, 6061 and ABS plastic?
ive been thinking about making trucks out of ABS plastic

streetheap and I have always been supportive of plastics, honestly i feel safe taking a nice solid mass of ABS about 40-45 but if it ever hit something hard, i dunno

I'm not sure the aluminum, but the plastic is delrin.
It works well, buts a bit expensive.

Re: Cheap DIY Wheel Lathe - Community Design Project
I gotta revisit this soon.. Spent an hour or two writing a post a while back and lost it.. I've been doing a ton of lathe work too.

Re: Cheap DIY Wheel Lathe - Community Design Project
Yes lotsa ghettoness, but there was a bit of CNC, wasn't there?!
Love what you guys are doing, hopefully I'll have a set of your trucks within the decade >_>

got little time, no money, and plenty of fresh wheels. I still have high hopes for the spring design on the last page though. Sometime soon

But, yeah, expensive.
Instead of ABS, I might suggest Nylon.

Is it really that bad? XD
LOL
I promise I'll get you a set by spring, even if they're not 'out'.

By hand? Let us know how that goes for you.. I find it usually makes bad flatspots worse

Works well for DIY radiusing, though.

Re: Cheap DIY Wheel Lathe - Community Design Project
I used a bench grinder to radius my otang durians. Measured where I wanted to grind them down to, held one wheel at a time on a hanger w/ my biltins. Spun them up to speed against the grinder and went to town. The results were surprisingly good.

Re: Cheap DIY Wheel Lathe - Community Design Project
Radius is easy. Flatspot removal is another story. Wobble causes you to sand in all the wrong places.

Basically it spins whatever you want and allows you to cut, sand, thread,... evenly.
Table legs and candle stick holders examples of what can be made out of wood. Personally we use our lathes to machine threads on the ends of rifle barrels for muzzle breaks and silencers

Re: Cheap DIY Wheel Lathe - Community Design Project
So, what's the best way to stop a wheel from spinning while on the drill?
Also, I have a drill press thingy like exactly like this, but in better condition. Any ideas on how to apply a chisel, or blade of some sort to a wheel held/spun by the drill?
