How many of you flatlanders have tried more then 3 types of bearings?
I have two sets of wheels for my board. One is a set or orangutangs with red bones and the other is a set of big zigs with some yellow shielded abec 7's (don't know the brand but if that sounds familiar to someone let me know). I have also used some generic bearings as well.
I have to say that the reds bones and the yellow shield bearings are about the same in speed and rolling distance. The generic I had didn't come close though.
What are the three types you have tried and how do you rank them compared to each other?
It's about time the yellow ones get replaced and I want a bearing that rolls much longer then them or the reds. IMO going downhill your bearings mean less unless you are trying to get as fast as possible. When you are pushing though, bearings affect your pushing efficiency, which then affects your rolling distance. I think a lot of the bearing reviews on this board seem to forget to take that into account and thats why so many people say one bearing is just as good as the next.

for flats, anything that stays clean with thin oil for lube.
Mile High Skates
great seals, somewhat thick lube but great bearings... Clean them out if you find the lube too thick and put in triflow or something else thats thin like sewing machine oil and thats about as fast as you can get for a skateboard...

I would have to agree. With the exception of a really high end bearing like swiss and ceramics, most bearings tend to feel pretty similar if they are treated well. I grew up and learned to skate in south florida. Believe me, I am familiar with flats. Take care of 'em and clean up. If you want to be that much smoother and quicker you're going to be dishing out an excessive amount of money.
EDIT: MHS bearings are sick. I have them on my DH board right now, but have done some campus cruising on it too. Smoooth.

I've got about 5 different brands of bearings. As far as I have used them, which is pretty much all flatland being in central florida, I can't say any were better than any other. However, there is the ease of use. Builtins win every time for ease, and any greaseballs lose for ease since they are double sealed and hard to clean. Other than that, I've kept all my bearings clean and I haven't seen any issues.

For the value, MHS.
I've got MHS, Reds, Biltins, Oust Moc9 (I think) some abec# crap and then there were the System bearings that came in on an early complete and suck hind tit. I do like the Reds and Biltins. Both are fast, smooth and quiet as soon as you mount 'em. They just feel faster from the gitgo. But if you need a lot of bearings, you just can't go wrong with MHS. I've got a lot of 'em.

Mr. Skates suggests sticking with the "thick" lube. It is of quality.
Pound for pound, dollar for dollar MHS bearings can't be beat. I know personally that he has been on a quest for the Holy Grail of bearings. He is quite certain he has reached Nirvana on price and quality with this bearing.
Clean and lube your balls often.

I actually recommend biltins. They last a long time (durability wise) and roll for pretty good when you clean and lube every so often.

I've tried nearly all bearings you can buy at a skate shop before 2004. There are some new ones out I've never seen... don't care to try them either.

Re: How many of you flatlanders have tried more then 3 types of bearings?
I used to skate strictly Bones, Reds and Swiss, and never really had any complaints about them at all. But I recently switched over to the newer Spitfire bearings, and I dont think Ill skate any other bearings again, they have 3 types, the blue shielded Cruisers that are like reds but a couple bucks cheaper, red shielded Burners that are the same price as Reds but faster out of the box, stay cleaner longer, and roll longer, and then they have the Swissfires which kill the Bones swiss, so fast straight out of the box and I havent cleaned then since i got the one set a few months back and are still fast as hell.

I think Bones Reds are ca ca (that's '5-year-old' for shit)
They are cheap and do roll good, but I feel the removable shields are utterly useless. They don't keep anything out like they are suppose to.
